The book examines the owner-managers' perception and assessment of disaster risk impact on micro and small enterprises (MSEs) ' sustainability in rural- urban set up of a developing economy in Africa. It notes that entrepreneurial traits greatly influence risk decisions by micro and small entrepreneurs across gender. However, four cluster traits found outstanding were commitment, determination and perseverance; drive to achieve/succeed; calculated risk taking and risk seeking together with self-confidence & optimism. Further, it notes that demographic characteristics that significantly influence micro and small entrepreneurs' perception of disaster risks were age, ethnicity, training and education. However, on gender basis, women entrepreneurs were keener on risks before investing as opposed to male entrepreneurs. This is attributed to their being in business due to necessity and not because there is an opportunity as is the case for male entrepreneurs. Moreover, several sources of information and approaches blended to inform micro and small entrepreneurs' assessment of risks affecting their enterprises.

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 10/10, , language: English, abstract: This paper analyzes whether the legislative women's quota implemented in Tanzania has helped to reduce the existing gender gap in that country. We focus on a set of development indicators indicated by the literature and an analysis of female political activity. We exploit the variation in the number of female representatives across the 131 districts of Tanzania, employing a Difference and Differences approach including fixed effects and controlling for a number of socioeconomic variables. Our analysis indicates that the legislative women's quota in Tanzania has led to significant reductions in the gender gap and improvements for women. The quota has effectively increased political participation in accordance with its goals, and the level of female representation continues to rise. We find evidence that the quota has reduced the gender gap in education for certain age groups, and we find indications of small improvements to female empowerment. In accordance with previous findings in other countries, we find that the increased female representation has led to substantial investments in water infrastructure that has greatly increased the number of people with access to clean water. While we do not find significant health impacts, this may be due to limitations in our dataset.

The preponderance of research regards entrepreneurial entry as a dichotomous choice between paid employment and entrepreneurship. Most classic models on the emergence of entrepreneurship either neglect or exclude the opportunity of engaging in both occupations at the same time. This view stands in contrast to increasing evidence that the majority of firm entry around the world occurs by individuals who simultaneously engage in paid employment and self-employment, an entry mode which has been termed hybrid entrepreneurship. 58% of all start-ups in Sweden have been found to be started in hybrid entrepreneurship and even in R&D-pursuing start-ups in Germany, this type of business entry represents 27% of all entrants.Next to this high prevalence of hybrid entrepreneurs among entrepreneurs, there are at least three reasons why these hybrid entrepreneurs should receive more attention. First, as hybrid entrepreneurs are often better educated than pure entrepreneurs, their business ideas might be expected to result in more high-growth ventures. Second, businesses run in pure entrepreneurship survive longer on average if they have been founded in hybrid entrepreneurship. Third, regardless of whether or not hybrid entrepreneurs generate greater economic impact than pure entrepreneurs, their relevance also emerges from their potential to evolve into valuable full-time businesses that otherwise would not have existed. This thesis therefore aims to advance research on hybrid entreprene...

There is an increasing trend of the conduct of monetary policy in developing countries to mirror, at least on paper, those in developed economies. The structures in the former economies are not only different but they are also weak in some areas. One aspect that came with the liberalization of the financial markets in Tanzania was changing the trading of Treasury securities in the primary market to the auction system which uses discriminatory prices, rather than a single uniform price, in allocating securities to bidders. This, however, was not coupled with development of an organized secondary market for the Treasury securities. Consequently, the resulting yield curve and the efficiency of this market may be expected to be different from where secondary markets are well developed. This work provides an initial assessment of the Treasury bill auction system in Tanzania and the efficiency of the primary market. It forms a basis for understanding the term structure of interest rates in Tanzania and analyzing the yield curve and the integrity of the auction process.

Seeing women as entrepreneurs was inconceivable a few years ago, in a male and conservative society. Despite the improvement of her economy, Algeria is experiencing a high rate of unemployment, including among academics. This prompted the state to follow a policy of youth employment, by giving them different facilities and granting them loans in order to create their own businesses. These factors have encouraged women graduates to venture into the entrepreneurship businesses. The current environment in Algeria promotes access to education and training of girls, but the socio-cultural environment remains a difficult obstacle to overcome. This study highlights the psychological characteristics of women entrepreneurs and their socio-cultural constraints.

The number of women, of working age in the United Kingdom (UK), that are actively choosing entrepreneurship over corporate management has increased. Understanding the entrepreneurial motivations behind this trend is important for academia, policy-makers and female entrepreneurs worldwide. The main assumption is that women are 'pushed' or forced into entrepreneurship by factors such as the gender pay gap and glass ceiling effect. However, findings from a comparative study between British and French entrepreneurs show that this assumption is more of a myth that needs to be laid to rest and that women today possess a strong entrepreneurial drive fuelled by their need for achievement, need to empower others as well as other motivators not previously associated with female entrepreneurs. Two new categorizations pertinent to female entrepreneurship (i.e. career change and identity change) were also unearthed.

Most women entrepreneurs are seen to be more realistic about their commercial prodigies and often make attempts to develop them within a family environment, while men gravitate more towards developing business hierarchies with defined rules and working business procedures. Women in Business: Theory, Practice and Flexible Approaches is a practical book that provides support and practical planning tools to guide both established and aspiring female entrepreneurs. Because self-employment and entrepreneurial activities are decisions that cannot be taken lightly, a number of checklists and tests which could be used to make entrepreneurial decision-making processes easier and more effective are discussed within the framework of feminist theories.

With this conclusion, the study recommends the franchising strategy to those countries whose Small Enterprise Strategies have been a failure due to enterprise failures stemming from lack of adequate entrepreneurial skills.

The pig population in urban and town areas has recently expanded due to increasing pork consumption. In Tanzania, the increased pork consumption has contributed to the raise of pig keeping households and transportation of live pigs from rural to urban areas in fetch for good market. The transportation of infected pigs plays significant role in transmission of infections into areas where there was no history of such infections. Some diseases such as Taenia solium Cysticercosis are known to be maintained in low socio-economic, unhygienic environment and poor pig rearing husbandry practices and therefore the possibility of transfer and subsequent establishment of these infections in urban areas is absolutely higher. Similarly, other highly infectious diseases such as African swine fever are spread very fast through transportation of live infected pigs. Therefore effective quarantine, restriction movement and slaughter of infected pigs may continue to be the only possible control measures in endemic areas. Porcine cysticercosis and African swine fever in Morogoro, Tanzania highlighted the serological surveillance status and associated risk factors in urban domestic pig farming.

The low supply of medical doctors (MDs) was experienced over the last several years in most countries in the world, and the situation is worse in developing countries as it is the case in Tanzania. Though there are efforts done and some of the efforts are just on the progress in marshalling MDs to address this crisis, it has hit the brick wall. A study was conducted to identify the reasons for low supply of medical doctors specifically in the context of Tanzania as it was conducted within the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MoHSW) system. There are standing causes of MDs shortage, but on top of that there were new causes of physicians' shortage that reflect the ongoing shortage of MDs. The standing causes were factors included in the growing demand such as having a population growth, aging population, increased awareness, economic factors. Also a diminishing supply which consists of factors as fewer entrants, MDs migration, physician aging and attrition, changing practice styles and changing professions. The book also hints on new causes which are restraining forces considering the efforts placed by different stakeholders to embrace the situation.

I consider myself an entrepreneur even though I spent 25 years in the corporate world. My passion is the beauty business. I created a consulting company to work primarily with beauty entrepreneurs. I was a beauty buyer and then advanced to become a Vice President in the high end department store category. For much of my career I observed people coming to sell me new products they created. So many had such great ideas but often missed the critical points they needed in order to sell into stores. Once I left the corporate world and began my own company to assist entrepreneurs in beauty, I was able to see the steps being taken to create a business in beauty. I learned even more about what to do and what not to do on every level. I knew writing this book and sharing all the tips I had for beauty entrepreneurs would help start up businesses to avoid the 10 most common mistakes and save money by working with the right support.

Strategic Bootstrapping is about helping entrepreneurs sift through the "noise" regarding bootstrapping a start-up. The cold-hard facts on bootstrapping are presented. Practically speaking, most entrepreneurs should avoid bootstrapping, realistically, most entrepreneurs will need to engage in some form of bootstrapping. The argument then shifts to how should one bootstrap? In this era of lean start-ups, effectuation, and bricolage, bootstrapping is oft romanticized but seldom analyzed. This book is different from other bootstrapping books in two key ways. First, it draws on evidence from scienti c study to offer best practices. Second, it utilizes this evidence to help en-trepreneurs thrive-not just survive.

Master's Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 1.0, University of Bremen, language: English, abstract: Economic growth and technological changes are often triggered by innovative entrepreneurs who discover, exploit, and explore undetected opportunities. However, before entrepreneurs can move forward they need capital in order to realize their business idea. In general, investors can be characterized as the gatekeepers who provide this financial bottleneck resource to entrepreneurs. Venture capital firms, in particular, are a highly specialized group of investors which may also act as facilitators for innovations. Given that entrepreneurs and venture capitalists have been mostly studied in isolated cases, no integrative framework has yet been developed. Thus, this study aims to unfold the interconnectedness and dependencies of both parties and derives inter alia two important variables, namely strategic orientation and trust, which have been poorlystudied in this field, but are crucial for the long‐term success of the relationship. The structure of this study corresponds with the process which is characteristic for the relationship between the venture capitalist and the entrepreneur:• The innovation process• The strategy dimension• The trust perspectiveThis study uses an adapted gatekeeper‐model by Csikszentmihalyi to reveal the different stages of the innovation process and to build a theoretical framework of the relationship between...

When women succeed, we all win. Breaking Through explores the mentoring relationship, and unravels its effects on women, businesses, society, and the economy. In 2010, author Martine Liautaud founded the Women Business Mentoring Initiative (WBMI) to support women entrepreneurs with the targeted advice and personalized guidance that can only come from a mentor. In late 2015, she set up the Women Initiative Foundation to broaden her action in favor of women in the business world. This book encapsulates the WBMI mission and other similar experiences inside international and US corporations, showing how mentoring and sponsorship can take many forms—and how each form benefits women in business. Through evidence-based narratives, you'll learn what real women have gained from both sides of the dynamic, and why they credit mentoring with the strength of their business success. These stories show how mentoring yields increased efficiency, improved financials, more effective management, increased innovation, a broader talent pool, and increased revenues, and how helping women succeed in business leads to increased philanthropy and improves community sustainability. Gender equality has made huge strides in the US and Western Europe, but this progress is only apparent in the junior levels of the workplace. This book shows how mentoring women entrepreneurs and women managers provides the key that opens the door to the new economy. Understand why mentoring is key to women's economic advancement Learn how mentoring yields tangible benefits beyond the workplace Delve into the experiences of real mentor/mentee pairs Consider the effectiveness of various types of mentoring Despite the increasing opportunities for women in business, statistics and pervading stereotypes suggest that true gender equality is still far on the horizon. Mentoring and sponsorship can be tremendously helpful to women looking to achieve great things—the wisdom of experience is a powerful asset in business strategy and decision-making, and the mentor/mentee relationship benefits everyone. Breaking Through makes a compelling case for the effectiveness of mentoring, with real women's stories of success.

Illegal immigrants are people who enter and reside in the country without proper visa or permit. Threat is warning that a person is going to be hurt or be punished. It is sometimes a sign of possible danger. This book finds out threats caused by illegal immigrants to recipient country; it looked what impacts illegal immigrants brought to the security of people especially to those living in areas bordering with Rwanda and Burundi. The author found that threats were the results of political instability and civil wars in the neighboring countries of Rwanda and Burundi which caused weapons to penetrate and spread to Tanzania easily. Demobilization of extra soldiers after the wars in Rwanda and Burundi resulted to those soldiers to look for whatever to survive with. Hence entered to Tanzania and made raids for economic gain. Moreover corruption on the part of local leaders spearheaded the problem. The long term solutions to such problem are seminars to immigration officers, police officers and local leaders. Education to the masses, increase of manpower (employees), more motivations and rewards to workers can also solve the problem.

They refute the idea that there is an ideal entrepreneurial “type,” and show that luck can be as important as a business plan in many enterprises. Above all, the authors emphasize that entrepreneurship is a career, not a one-time event, and winners are those who can keep themselves in the game. Never Bet the Farm is an easy-to-understand and attractive tool for anyone who has a business idea, but who might be wary of the risks implied in starting their own business.
