Malnutrition and infection are invariably linked together each aggravating the other. Cell-mediated immunity, a function of the T-cells is markedly depressed by malnutrition. HIV, the virus that causes AIDS acts by destroying the T-cells which are actively involved in the defense of the body against viruses, fungi, parasites, bacteria and destruction of cancer cells. There is a need for HIV/AIDS infected persons to know and build a positive attitude towards dietary management of HIV/AIDS to prolong and improve their quality of lives. This book outlines the knowledge and attitudes towards the role of nutrition management of HIV/AIDS among the infected and affected.

Mental health and HIV/AIDS are closely interlinked. Mental disorders, including substance-use disorders, are associated with increased risk of HIV infection and affect adherence to and efficacy of antiretroviral treatments. Conversely, HIV infection can increase risk for neuropsychiatric complications including stress, mood, and neurocognitive disorders. This book provides clinicians with a comprehensive evidenced-based and practical approach to the management of patients with HIV infection and co-morbid mental disorders. It provides up-to-date and clear overviews of current clinical issues, as well as the relevant basic science. Information and data from studies of different HIV groups (eg men who have sex with men) make the text relevant to a broad spectrum of clinicians, including those working with low socioeconomic status groups in high income countries and those working in the developing world. The book uses the popular format of the World Psychiatric Association’s Evidence and Experience series. Review chapters summarize the evidence on the epidemiology, pathogenesis and clinical aspects of mental disorders in HIV,and interventions (both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology including drug-drug interactions). These are complemented by commentaries addressing particular facets of each topic and providing insight gained from clinical experience. Psychiatrists, psychologists and all mental health staff working with HIV-infected patients will find this book of great benefit.

Several governments, Non Governmental Organization and Faith Based Organization has made it clear of their commitment to towards the education, treatment and care and eradication of the pandemic. this also calls in the role of the church as an organization to determine what role does it play on mitigation. An analysis of data collected suggests that there is need for the church to engage its congregants to more information in HIV and AIDS awareness through its teachings. However there is need to train the pastors first before they are ordained and sent out to work with parishioners and congregants. The researcher recommended the introduction of training of pastors in HIV and AIDS issues and that man as decision makers should also be involved in caring, and all management and mitigation issues in relation to HIV and AIDS issues.

Understanding and monitoring the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among premarital clients and discordant rate among premarital couples and applying specific interventions targeted at this group could bring dual benefit as it prevents both heterosexual and vertical transmission of the disease. 8.2% of premarital VCT clients included in the current study were sero positive for HIV. 6.5% of premarital VCT couples were found to be sero discordant, while concordant negative and concordant positive accounted for 92.0% and 1.4% respectively. Both HIV sero positivity and discordance were relatively higher among those who previously separated/divorced and widowed partners. So, don't you think that exerting special efforts to make premarital couples aware of their own and their partners' sero status before engagement is imperative to their future healthy life and the future of the nations?

After nearly 4 years of working in HIV and AIDS field, I have studied the whole episode from different parts of the world. My experience of being born and grown up in Africa, where nearly 22.5 million people are living with HIV and AIDS and has only 10% of world's population (UNAIDS/WHO,2008) and my working experience in England for nearly seven years have taught me that, the developed world approaches towards HIV Pandemic are quite different from that of developing World. The review of educational approach on HIV awareness, prevention, treatment and care management reveals that there are health inequalities between the developed and developing worlds (Pratt, 2003). In addition I have learned that the attitudes of us, Africans, towards HIV and AIDS need to change in order to effectively promote HIV/AIDS Prevention intervention in the communities, starting from the grassroots through to the government levels. The prevention Intervention of HIV in the developed world has been successful due to various opportunities and strengths including economy, technology and communities' accessibility to education which, have much influence in combating HIV and AIDS Pandemic.

In all programs in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic, there is a general consensus that information and education remain the backbone. To disseminate information, the media can play a significant role. However, various commentators have claimed that the media have been an underutilized force in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Moreover, studies of media coverage of HIV/AIDS conducted in various parts of the world have shown that scant coverage and distorted portrayal are almost the rule of the day. Generally speaking, however, whether the media are using their roles in the prevention of HIV/AIDS effectively remains a subject of scholarly debate. In Ethiopia, imperial information about media coverage of HIV/AIDS is sparse. This book, therefore, provides detailed analyzes of the magnitude and nature of HIV/AIDS coverage in Ethiopian newspapers. Since the analysis was made using different theories and other researches as a backdrop, the book provides important implications not only about the coverage of HIV/AIDS but also about theoretical underpinnings. The book will be useful for students, journalists, researchers and professionals in the field of media and communications.

HIV/AIDS has challenged humans perhaps more than any other pandemic in recent history. In the era of globalization and increased movement of people crossing borders, immigrants especially from HIV prone countries to the western world have been singled out as one of the 'risk groups' by host nations. In countries like Sweden, where multicultural society is in the making, HIV prevention programs have targeted immigrants more than others. However, HIV infections are still on the increase and HIV prevention strategies and methods have been questioned. This book explores the views of HIV prevention workers drawn from immigrants themselves and closely examines explanations from structural to specific contextual factors for the challenges of HIV prevention in multicultural neighborhoods of Gothenburg city in Sweden. The study surfaces out new dimensions that have not been sufficiently addressed by concerned bodies in HIV prevention efforts. The analysis from this study would help policy makers, professionals, HIV practitioners and ordinary people especially in the western world, where immigrants are significant proportion of society.

The distribution of patients revealed 60% (40) of rural areas, 44% (30) are smokers, 52% (39) having either heart diseases and/or hypertension, and 40% (30) of positive family history for the disease. The levels of MDA, GSH, GPX, and CAT were measured in sera of patients and control group. The statistical analysis exhibited significant elevation for MDA levels and significant decreases for GSH and GPX levels in the group of patients when compared with those of the control group. Patients from rural areas showed significant rise for MDA values when compared with those of urban areas. Variations of oxidative stress markers were found to be essentially related to prostate cancer and independent on smoking or other diseases in the studied patients. MDA levels were demonstrated to increase significantly in patients of positive family history when compared with those of negative family history of prostate cancer.

It has caused millions of death globally and has led to deep demographic changes mainly in most heavily affected countries. Voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT) is one of the key strategies in the HIV/AIDS prevention and control programs. However, utilization of these services has been reported to be low mainly among adult men even though they are yet the key decision makers both at home, at the workplace, in the parliament as well as at religious institutions. The book presents the prevalence and factors associated with voluntary HIV counselling and testing services utilization among adult men (aged 15-59 years) in Ethiopia. Heng Sopheab HIV Epidemiological Context in Cambodia and Preventive Interventions

Подробнее...

9327 руб.
Cambodia is one of the few countries in the world to achieve the MDG in reversing the spread of HIV, with the prevalence falling from 3% in 1998 to 0.7% in 2008. The decline indicates a high commitment from government and civil society in the fight against HIV. The book highlights the success in multiple interventions and challenges facing over the course of the epidemic. The work is based on different studies conducted over the course of preventive interventions from 2002 to 2005 to investigate the epidemiological context of the epidemic, and how this is related to changes in risk behaviours in the general population and in sub-groups of the population. Results from this work suggest an optimistic future in HIV control and prevention in Cambodia. However, challenges do remain, including the reliable quality of HIV/STI service deliveries, the sustainability of preventive programmes, and the dependency of heavily external funding supports. This book should be useful for students and professionals in public health especially for program planners and researchers, or anyone who may be interested in the development of HIV prevention and control in developing countries.

Shorttitle: HIV/AIDS/TB in Kenya Mario J. Azevedo, Gwendolyn S. Prater, and Sandra Hayes argue that, without a deeper understanding of Kenya's cultural norms and practices on HIV/TB, which are spreading alarmangly in Kenya, scholars and health professionals will not be able to eradicate or meaningfully contain the devastating impact of the twin epidemics. A focus on factors such as the environment and the distribution and management of scarce resources alone represent only a fraction of what is needed to restore the health of the people and have them respond positively to the efforts made by the government authorities, health care providers, and humanitarians of international organizations. The three authors acknowledge the small victories Kenya has achieved against the burden of disease. However, without an integrated approach to the reduction and eradication of the many man-made and environmental factors responsible for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, diabetes, and other ailments, which together weaken and inhibit people's immune system, Kenya's health future will remain bleak for many years to come.

This book outlines the current epidemiology of HIV associated oral lesions globally and stratifies countries falling under all six WHO regional offices according to high, medium and low prevalence of oral manifestations of HIV infection. Currently there are many knowledge gaps in the prevalence of oral lesions related to HIV infection from different regions as majority of the countries have no database or referral system for these kind of lesions. This is an obstacle to the implementation of various HIV prevention and health promotion programmes as oral lesions are strong indicators of HIV infection, invariably often are the first lesions to be identified and reportedly, are markers of disease progression and parallel the changes in various laboratory markers like CD4 cell count and HIV viral load. Having such a database can prove to be very pivotal in our fight against AIDS because of its diagnostic and prognostic significance. This work is amongst some early studies to show the prevalence globally across countries falling under all six WHO regional offices.
