The books is about perspectives of participants in literacy projects on the significance of education through literacy in Zambia an African society. It carries voices of beneficiaries of literacy education on social, cultural and psychological changes that take place at individual, family and community levels as people acquire the skills of reading and writing in a society where such skills were not part of people's lives. Key finding of the work is that literacy education dispels fears and raises self esteem of participants in literacy. The book blends well literacy theory with experiences of the those afflicted by the scourge of illiteracy. What's in Academic Literacy Mentoring

Although the term 'mentoring' originates from Greek mythology, others place the origins of its use in the practice of mentoring much earlier, and suggest that its roots lie in the earliest cave-dwelling days of mankind. Furthermore, the phenomenon of mentoring developed not only in western culture, but also has a long history in many other cultures including the Chinese and the Native American Indian. This thesis examines mentoring of academic literacy from a humanistic-caring-moral viewpoint as a pedagogy that relates to the student as a unique individual, working on his cognitive-academic literacy development. The significance of the study is located in the perception that literacy in general and in higher education in particular, has high importance at many levels – individual, academic, social and economic. Still, in academia the prevalent opinion today is that students worldwide do not know how to write. The lack of literacy knowledge is also evident in the world of economics. Thus, mentoring of academic literacy can be a pedagogical approach which might show itself as a way to obtain better results of performing academic literacy.

In spite of slow economic progress, Himachal Pradesh has recorded an impressive social development, where literacy constitutes one of the major social aspects in which considerable progress has been made. At the time of 2011 census the state literacy level was higher than that of India. The literacy level of scheduled tribes vis-a-vis the general population a notable disparity clearly comes out between the literacy levels of the two components of the society in Himachal Pradesh. The relatively low literacy level of the scheduled tribes can be attributed to the historical reasons and their continuing backwardness. Secondly, the majority of the scheduled tribes are either landless or they are small landholders which is one of the reasons of their continuing poverty.

Adult Literacy as Technique and Technology of Governmentality

This book examines the policy for adult literacy in New Zealand, in particular developments since the International Adult Literacy Survey of 1996. The findings of the International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) led to the problematising of adult literacy in terms of the needs of New Zealand society and economy and the greater engagement of government, businesses and tertiary education providers. Foucault’s notion of governmentality provides a lens through which policy developments and documents are analysed for the period from 2001 to 2011. It is argued that the policy formulation around adult literacy is concerned with the techniques and technologies through which the literacy needs of the population are constructed and controlled. The concerns of policy are how to bring people to a state of literacy so that they can be usefully involved in society, as employable workers. The book argues that the recent tertiary education reforms and the subsuming of adult literacy into the tertiary education sector with increased emphasis on audit and monitoring practices impact on identities and self government of learners and providers.

The Search for an Ideal Society in the African Novel:

The subject treated in this book is about how Armaih and Ngugi begin(in their novels) first by depicting the status quo in Ghana and Kenya respectively; in their respective endeavours, they express their dissociation from this very status quo to project a vision, stemming from their ideologies, of an ideal r-society whereby the mode of conduct would be to contribute to the common well-being. Their ideologies are a synthesis of their traditional thought (the Akan in the case of Armah and the Gikuyu in the case of Ngugi) and the Western world view, though Armah quite singularly, tends to deny any Western value that would influence positively his society. Armah''s ideology of the ''way,''or reciprocity, could be considered as the oppositional voice to Western hegemony. He claims it to be superior to the Western view, or the ''gleam'', as he calls it in The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born. Ngugi''s ideology for its part combines traditional culture that clings to land and the Western philosophy of Marxism which, contrary to Armah''s belief, can share a common ground with the African communalistic spirit.

In short, this study seeks to understand the changing nature of leisure activities of Taiwanese women. Developmentality

This work draws on a wide range of postcolonial and critical development scholars to construct a critical theoretical framework and to provide productive lens through which to make sense of the changing language, content and practice of Western aid interventions in Africa and other postcolonial societies, and to reveal continuities and discontinuities in the global architecture of aid. In particular, the study locates recent discourses on development and poverty reduction within the broader historical continuum of power inequalities in relation to international development cooperation and global governance generally. Mawuko-Yevugah argues that the new multilateral poverty reduction framework does not represent a rupture in Western discourses, policies, representations in Africa and other postcolonial settings and that, conceptions such as civil society, partnership, ownership or participation in the poverty reduction discourse produces new technologies of governance where a IFIs- elites consensus legitimizes the neoliberal hegemonic agenda.

Rebranding The Church

The state of the contemporary world enforces on us a need for reflection on the mission of Christianity in the postmodern world, especially in western societies. The urgency is underscored by the fact that we can in this environment see the Christian message in its historical continuity from the Apostolic Age until now. What is more it is in western societies that we can see with some clarity the cultural consequences of the interaction of the Christian message with the society particularly in re-shaping the cultural forms and values of the society. It can be argued that western culture was transformed by its contact with the Christian message just as there is equal validity in the notion that the pristine Christian message of the Apostolic Age was also transformed (some may even say transliterated or distorted) by the interaction with western cultures and western societies. The hope is that we may in the process side-step the path that led to the Christian cul-de-sac of contemporary Christianity in Europe and North America. The most important challenge is to return the Church to its Head and Proprietor, Christ the Redeemer of mankind.

This book aims to examine the process and the meaning of consumerism in contemporary culture and society, using the theoretical frames produced by the scholars from the Frankfurt School, on the one hand, and by Jean Baudrillard, on the other. Some questions about the cultural impact of the “consumerist society” need to be raised: what consumerist society means; which are the main problems around it as far as social theory is concerned; are we all part of this society and if not, who is not part of it; how the consumerist society develops and expands during modernity, and what goes next in the contemporary society. Answering all those questions, we definitely meet the crucial problem about culture in the conditions of that society, since consumerist society and culture are as two sides of one coin, they are in relation and impact on each other. Moreover, the theoretists studied here analyzed culture and society in the same perspective: as two parts which are in infinite relation.

The Rise of Ancient China

This book examines the source of Chinese civilization, foundations of traditional Chinese society and early patterns of power transition. It engages readers in a search for a broad understanding of China''s traditional culture and the enduring legacies of the past-in-the-present. It questions the conventional view about China''s past, be that of a Confucian, a Communist or a Western ethnocentric historiographer. Most theories concerning the history of China postulate a central culture based on the Yellow River valley and radiating out into the vast areas of what we know as China. Informed by the latest archaeological discoveries, the author points out an alternative view on formation and development of Chinese civilization. Exploring the social and political upheavals that characterized the continuous disintegration and annexation in the 1st millennium BC, the author offers a unique account of the process of periodic fragmentation and amalgamation. Though presented for specialists in the field, virtually every page of this book is intelligible to the lay person, opening a window for anyone interested in the subject to look at this ancient culture from a new angle.

The Paper Trail explores how paper was used in the imperial court of Han China to solidify social and political systems that have influenced the country even in our own time. Here we see how paper made possible the spread of Buddhism and Manichaeism into Japan, Korea, and Vietnam; how it enabled theologians, scientists, and artists to build the vast empire of the Abbasid Caliphate and embed the Koran in popular culture; how it was carried along the Silk Road by merchants and missionaries, finally reaching Europe in the late thirteenth century; and how, once established in Europe, along with the printing press, paper played an essential role in the three great foundations of Western modernity: the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution. A dramatic, comprehensively researched, vividly written story populated by holy men and scholars, warriors and poets, rulers and ordinary men and women--here is not only the story of paper, but of human society.

Commodification and Culture

In this paper it is proposed that our highly commodified society can in fact provide a means of bringing economic and cultural aspects together in a united framework without allowing culture to be purely commercialised. As today’s prosperity and quality of life can be maintained on a long-term basis only with a sustainable system, the study focuses on the need for responsible practices by entrepreneurs. The paper thus discusses the topic of commodification as well as the issue of sustainability. The exemplary clothes company Ibonica was chosen as the case study for this paper and evaluated in terms of its business conduct. Ibonica produces garments for women that combine the traditional patterns of Maya embroidery from Yucatan and modern fashion aspects. The paper attempts to draw attention to the beneficial combination of cultural and economic aspects. Additionally, criteria for the implementation of responsible practices within a company are discussed. The results suggest that entrepreneurs should make use of commodification, as consumers seem to approve of adapting culture. Nevertheless, consumers put a higher value on the quality than on the authenticity of the products, even though they do appreciate the cultural aspects. The results also show that the sustainable conduct of a business is not of importance to consumers.

Issues related to culture and management in developing countries are more and more a focus of academic interest. However, there remains paucity on how culture influences management practice, the meaning of work-world and coping strategies for the African managers. In this respect, the place and effect of culture in Western management discourse is a major concern in African socioeconomic development discourse. However, while the African managers are very knowledgeable about accepted theories and models of Western values knowledge about the cultures and values of their own society is limited therefore making the ability to contribute something original to their societal development limited. Thus, while Western management has no doubt, contributed somehow to the development and progress of organisations in Africa, I am of the opinion that the organisational performances since decolonisation have been disappointing compared to achievements of some other developing economies, notably the Asian countries. This book focuses on managerial practice of leadership, motivation, recruitment and promotion around which cultural values, the meaning of work and coping strategies are structure.

Consistent with the social practices theoretical perspective and following similar research traditions in this area of literacy study, I used ethnographic research methods to collect data and grounded theory methods to analyse data on literacy use in Bweyale. The study revealed that rural people, contrary to popular perceptions about their illiteracy and hence lack of literacy, actually use reading and writing in a variety of ways in different domains of literacy use. Literacy pervades most aspects of rural community life, making rural people use literacy in many rich and creative ways. Most people, regardless of their literacy status, participate in local literacy practices. The most prominent areas of literacy use in rural community life are livelihood activities, education, religion, bureaucracy, household life, and personal life.

This paper investigates several common alleged stereotypes related to the Asian learners in terms of reticence and passivity in the classroom and it reviews the factors offered as explanations for the perceived reticence and passivity. In addition to acknowledging the part culture plays in this behavioral profile, I have argued that factors other than culture i.e., students related and teacher issues play no less a role in the way Asian students interact in the ESL/EFL classroom. Consumer Culture in Sister Carrie and The House of Mirth

One of the most important phenomena of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries is the rise of mass consumption. This consumer culture is abundantly reflected in the literature of the time. This book aims at comparing the status of individuals in the American consumer culture at the turn of the century in two novels, Sister Carrie (1900) by Theodore Dreiser and The House of Mirth (1905) by Edith Wharton, in the light of Jean Baudrillard’s theory of consumption. Baudrillard states that in this kind of society, human beings are valued for reasons other than their humanity and they live according to a new rhythm: the rhythm of succession or consumption of objects. In both novels, characters have insatiable desire for commodities which are introduced, in their society, as signs of success, happiness, and salvation. Characters use these commodities to be distinguished from their fellowmen in order to determine their identities. In this way, the interactive human relationships are either materialized or replaced by the individuals’ relationship with commodities. Those interested in the American consumer society at the turn of the century will find this book a valuable source.

Rediscovering Religious Human Rights In Myanmar

Unlike the Monarchical period, there is incontrovertible discrimination on the basis of religion and race in Myanmar society. Several Churches and Schools were established and Christians were under the mercy wings of Britishers. Today, the Buddhists majority in the country degrades the image of Christians as traitors of the country and Christianity is alleged as political tool for the expansion of Western culture and colonial power. There exist theocracies where one religion is given preferential treatment and is the central feature of political life. This book is a humble attempt to unveil the role of Myanmar Churches in rediscovering religious human rights in Myanmar.
