Any events that challenge the survival of living organisms may be classified as stressors. These stressors could include, for example, lack of food, increased population pressure, predatory pressure, climatic events or in the case of humans, loss of a loved one, lack of financial security or uncertainty in the future. Although most physiological systems are affected by stress, those systems that regulate reproductive physiology and behaviour are the most sensitive. All multicellular organisms show a stress related effect on reproduction, although the more complex organisms, such as mammals, have the most complex effects. The objective of this book is to provide a comparative analysis of the mechanisms by which stress regulates reproduction exploring the evolution of stress perceiving systems from the simplest organisms to humans. Taking an integrated approach, utilising a genes-to-environment overview, the book examines the stressors that occur at all levels of organisation. These theories are used to examine and explain human and animal reproductive behaviour and physiology under stressful conditions providing a well-written, concise introduction to this important subject.

For example, a survey of European Union member states found that 28% of employees reported stress-related illness or health issues, and studies in the USA have found that over 25% of employees reported that they are often or very often burned out by their work. Also, not all stress should be or can be eliminated, as many industries and jobs are highly demanding in their nature. Therefore, it is important that employees, employers, clinicians, and researchers endeavor to develop a better understanding of workplace stressors and how employee health and well-being can be improved. This book can help individuals and organizations better appreciate stressors faced by employees. It showcases research by over two dozen authors in twelve chapters, focusing on the interpersonal and occupation-based sources of workplace stress, as well as how to alleviate work stress. Coworkers, supervisors, and others with whom a person works can have a dramatic influence on the degree of stress a worker experiences, and it is often the interpersonal conflict that is unrelated to one's job that is the most difficult to manage. Stress is a feeling that's created when we react to particular events. It's the body's way of rising to a challenge and preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina, and heightened alertness. The events that provoke stress are called stressors, and they cover a whole range of situations-everything from outright physical danger to making a class presentation or taking a semester's worth of your toughest subject. We all experience episodic stress - getting ready for a major exam, completing an important paper, perhaps getting ready for an important interview. However, a continuous "state" of stress should not become a way of life. A student's life in India is subjected to different kinds of stressors, such as the pressure of academics with an obligation of success, uncertain future and difficulties envisaged for integration into the system. These students face social, emotional and physical and family problems which may affect their learning ability and academic performance. Some of them find it hard to cope with the stress and lag behind, while others see the pressure as challenge to work harder.

Reveals the powerful and undermining effects of stress on good decision making-and what leaders can do about it The ability to make sound and timely decisions is the mark of a good leader. But when leaders with otherwise strong track records suddenly begin making poor decisions-as seen in the recent corporate scandals that rocked the business world-the impact can be widespread. In The Stress Effect, leadership expert Henry L. Thompson argues that stress is often the real culprit behind this leadership failure: when leaders' stress levels become sufficiently elevated-whether in the boardroom or on the front line of a manufacturing process-their ability to effectively use their emotional intelligence and cognitive ability in tandem to make wise decisions is significantly impaired. Until now, experts have argued that increasing your emotional intelligence will help you cope with and manage stress. This book suggests that stress actually blocks access to your emotional intelligence as well as your cognitive ability, two critical components in the decision-making process. This book Shows how stress adversely affects the performance of even the most savvy leaders Reveals the truth about one of the prime factors behind the current failure of leadership Offers a solid prescription for building a «stress resilient system» and arms leaders with best practices for managing specific stressors that take the biggest toll on decision making Is written by an award-winning organizational psychologist and leadership consultant whose clients include a roster of Fortune 500 companies A groundbreaking and insightful resource for leaders, The Stress Effect reopens the dialogue on stress, its effect on decision making, and what to do about it.

Frans Bruijn J.de Stress and Environmental Regulation of Gene Expression and Adaptation in Bacteria, 2 Volume Set

Bacteria in various habitats are subject to continuously changing environmental conditions, such as nutrient deprivation, heat and cold stress, UV radiation, oxidative stress, dessication, acid stress, nitrosative stress, cell envelope stress, heavy metal exposure, osmotic stress, and others. In order to survive, they have to respond to these conditions by adapting their physiology through sometimes drastic changes in gene expression. In addition they may adapt by changing their morphology, forming biofilms, fruiting bodies or spores, filaments, Viable But Not Culturable (VBNC) cells or moving away from stress compounds via chemotaxis. Changes in gene expression constitute the main component of the bacterial response to stress and environmental changes, and involve a myriad of different mechanisms, including (alternative) sigma factors, bi- or tri-component regulatory systems, small non-coding RNA’s, chaperones, CHRIS-Cas systems, DNA repair, toxin-antitoxin systems, the stringent response, efflux pumps, alarmones, and modulation of the cell envelope or membranes, to name a few. Many regulatory elements are conserved in different bacteria; however there are endless variations on the theme and novel elements of gene regulation in bacteria inhabiting particular environments are constantly being discovered. Especially in (pathogenic) bacteria colonizing the human body a plethora of bacterial responses to innate stresses such as pH, reactive nitrogen and oxygen species and antibiotic stress are being described. An attempt is made to not only cover model systems but give a broad overview of the stress-responsive regulatory systems in a variety of bacteria, including medically important bacteria, where elucidation of certain aspects of these systems could lead to treatment strategies of the pathogens. Many of the regulatory systems being uncovered are specific, but there is also considerable “cross-talk” between different circuits. Stress and Environmental Regulation of Gene Expression and Adaptation in Bacteria is a comprehensive two-volume work bringing together both review and original research articles on key topics in stress and environmental control of gene expression in bacteria. Volume One contains key overview chapters, as well as content on one/two/three component regulatory systems and stress responses, sigma factors and stress responses, small non-coding RNAs and stress responses, toxin-antitoxin systems and stress responses, stringent response to stress, responses to UV irradiation, SOS and double stranded systems repair systems and stress, adaptation to both oxidative and osmotic stress, and desiccation tolerance and drought stress. Volume Two covers heat shock responses, chaperonins and stress, cold shock responses, adaptation to acid stress, nitrosative stress, and envelope stress, as well as iron homeostasis, metal resistance, quorum sensing, chemotaxis and biofilm formation, and viable but not culturable (VBNC) cells. Covering the full breadth of current stress and environmental control of gene expression studies and expanding it towards future advances in the field, these two volumes are a one-stop reference for (non) medical molecular geneticists interested in gene regulation under stress.

Interest in the negative and positive outcomes of stress in individuals working as helpers has risen over the last 25 years. Previous studies have targeted groups such as therapists, social workers, physicians and nurses. However, volunteers as helpers have been largely neglected in the empirical literature. Most of the research works related to stress and refugees investigated the psychological conditions of refugees as a consequence of the traumatic events in their life and their life in exile. However, humanitarian workers, emergency response professionals, volunteers and others who work with refugees, for some length of time or hear their terrifying experiences can develop secondary trauma. Being compassionate people and motivated mostly by altruistic ideas, volunteers working with refugees might have a higher risk amongst these groups. The current investigation made one of the first contributions to research on volunteers assisting refugees and can stimulate the development of new hypotheses and create platforms for future research.

This book deals with role stress perceived by the veterinarians in Kerala. Veterinarians of the Department of Animal Husbandry play a major role is in carrying out various developmental activities in this sector. They have been traditionally involved in treatment of animals and of late they have the additional responsibility of carrying out project work associated with implementation of schemes in the animal husbandry sector in the panchayat where they work. Consequently the responsibility and work load of an average veterinarian has increased considerably and the veterinarian is placed in a position where he has to play more than one role. In such cases if the role occupant is unable to balance the two roles it may lead to inadequate performance of either role, or role stress which could affect the productivity of the veterinarian. Thus from the point of view of the organization it is important to study the nature and type of stressors of the veterinarians in the state and its influence on job and social commitment.

Specimens are designed and fabricated. The tests are performed under multiaxial fatigue in phase combined loading bending and torsion, with zero mean stress (R=-l) at room temperature. Five groups of multiaxial fatigue experiments are performed, constant amplitude, linear increasing and decreasing, Low-High loading sequence, High-Low loading sequence and equivalent flight loading fatigue. Prediction of life specimens are studied at three methods: Palmgren-Miner, Corten - Dolan, and Marsh. The methods are conservative to some specimens and non-conservative to another. The effects of stage life (ns) have been examined and fatigue life of specimens are decreased when the stage life is decreased. Comparisons between High-Low & Low-High loading sequences in fatigue life (multi stress level) have been investigated. The Low-High loading sequence is less dangerous than High-Low loading sequence at the same stress range (equal loading stages). Studies the effect of stress range fatigue life have been investigated and the fatigue life is decreased with increasing the stress range fatigue (having the same lowest stress). For the fatigue of equivalent flight loading, the life is depend basically on stress range and the cruising ...

Alexandra Schulz The relationship between social anxiety, subjective stress and salivary cortisol

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Psychology - Biological Psychology, grade: 1.0, University of Freiburg, language: English, abstract: Socially anxious individuals perceive social interactions as threatening to their safety and consequently exhibit specific physiological and psychological anxiety reactions, referred to as stress responses. Recent studies in patients with social anxiety have shown that pharmacologically induced cortisol increase reduced the psychological stress reactivity to a socio-evaluative stressor. These results suggest a potential mechanism by which cortisol and the psychological stress response interact. Thus, we hypothesized that the relationship between social anxiety and subjective stress would be mediated, or moderated by endogenous cortisol increase during stress. Specially, we hypothesize that cortisol increase acts as a buffer for the psychological stress response. A sample of 120 healthy participants underwent the Trier Social Stress Test for groups (TSST-G; von Dawans, Kirschbaum, & Heinrichs, 2011). Although, we found a direct relationship of social anxiety with both the perceived subjective stress, and the cortisol increase, neither our mediation, nor moderation hypothesis were confirmed.

Denise Bacchus STRESS AND COPING AMONG PROFESSIONAL BLACK WOMEN

Подробнее...

Professional Black women's (PBW) experiences with work-related stress are rooted in the social, political, and economic context of the work environment. Historically, this environment has been characterized by blocked opportunities for mobility along with intersection of race and gender discrimination. The specific aims of this study were:(1) to describe the coping responses of PBW using Lazarus and Folkman's theoretical model for stress and coping and (2) to describe the coping resources PBW use in response to work-related stress. Study findings did not support any of the hypotheses related to the theoretical model. PBW were more likely to use emotion-focused coping in response to work-related stress. Engaging one's spiritual and/or religious belief were theorized as an emotion focused response to stress, however, among this sample, practices such as praying or belief in God were reported as a powerful problem focused coping strategy. This book is about the intersection of gender, race, and socio-economic class and how Black women cope with work-related stress. Discussions include implications for social work intervention, anti-discrimination policy, social work education and research.
