Optical and fiber optic chemical sensors have been reported extensively in literature on last two decades. Fiber optic sensors have since then found applications in chemical, biochemical, bio medical and environmental sensing. In general, Fiber optic sensors are classified as intrinsic and extrinsic type sensors. In the extrinsic type of sensors the optical fiber is only used as a means of light transport to an external sensing system. The intrinsic fiber optic sensors differ from extrinsic sensors, where light does not have to leave the optical fiber to perform the sensing function. In the intrinsic fiber optic sensors, the optical fiber structure is modified and the fiber itself plays an active role in the sensing function. Examples of intrinsic fiber sensors include, fibers with Bragg gratings, Long period gratings modified cladding or micro or macro bends. Some of these techniques use the evanescent field interaction for the sensing purpose. One of the accessing method of evanescent wave from the optical fiber is to reduce the cladding thickness. Acoustic sensors have been developed for many years. However, most acoustic sensors in application are chemical sensors which rely on the chemical material principle to predict mechanical vibration response signals subject to acoustics waves. In this book, we propose the new acoustic wave detection approach, considering that a continuous structure such as beam or plate with several response characteristics from an acoustic excitation can be a candidate for a sensor used to locate an acoustic source. Acoustic waves will be successfully reconstructed only if this inverse method provides bounds to the ill-conditioned results during the identification process. So the Tikhonov regularization technique is employed for the wave reconstruction work from responses. Effects of sensor design parameters, such as material properties,sensor structure dimensions and random noise background on the wave detection quality have been evaluated. Results show that such an approach is very good and reliable, it can be practical in acoustic sensing and will have wide applications in the field of acoustic wave sensing, especially, in the areas of security and disaster recovery by using qualified sensors.

We created and simulated the model and observed the variation of quantization error, noise variance and dynamic range of the signal to achieve the minimum average sample number (ASN) and desired error probabilities of detection and false alarm for sine wave and similar input signals. This report comprises of theoretical analysis and practical implementation of spectrum sensing circuit in Xilinx system generator. Simulations are done to observe the effect of various parameters on ASN and shown.

This book deals with distributed averaging methods in wireless sensor networks. To this end, wireless sensor nodes are equipped with dedicated sensing, computing, and communication devices. Our goal is to calculate the average of measurements through the average consensus (AC). To provide the reader with the necessary prerequisites, we summarize graph theory and different network topologies in the first part of this book. We then discuss static and dynamic variants of the AC algorithm. The static algorithm is used if all sensors measure constant signals that do not change over time. In the case where the sensors measure time-varying signals, the dynamic algorithm is used. For both the static and the dynamic case, we consider different linear and nonlinear AC weight design methods to improve performance in transient and stationary scenarios. We further study the behavior of the various versions of AC in different network topologies and different simulation settings. Our numerical results suggest that nonlinear AC is superior to linear AC and that dynamic AC succeeds in tracking rapidly varying signal means.

Indoor localisation based on ubiquitous WLAN has exhibited the capability of being a cheap and relatively precise technology and has been verified by many successful examples. Its performance is subject to change due to multipath propagation and changes in the environment which cannot be easily eliminated. This book addresses the automatic localisation of indoor user and proposes solutions for both positioning and seamlessly tracking a user using WLAN technology in addition to image sensing. By fusing these modalities we obtain better performance than using them individually. A fusion function designed to merge both analysis results into one semantic interpretation of user location is presented. Also a tracking approach based on an adaptive function that converts times between locations into probabilities and employs a Viterbi-based solution is proposed. The effectiveness of the fusion and the tracking approaches is evaluated on a very challenging dataset throughout a university building. Results that are presented demonstrate high accuracy that can be achieved. The potential usefulness of this work is envisaged in a range of ambient assisted living applications.
