Modelling of water flow is one of the techniques used in describing the movement of water and determining flow accumulation within a catchment. GIS enables modelling of spatial variability hence this book describes the determination of flow distribution and accumulation, estimation of runoff potential, and identification of suitable dam sites within a catchment in a GIS environment. ArcHydro extension of ArcGIS was used in the determination of flow distribution and subsequent catchment delineation while ArcCN-Runoff tool was used to determine the potential runoff based on land cover, soil type and amount of rainfall. Suitable dam sites, volume and the areas that would be submerged were then identified using other ArcGIS tools. Simulation of dam storage capacities has also proven to be effecient in GIS environment.

The relevant information has been collected through questionnaire by interview with the visitors. The recreational value of RNP was estimated using the travel cost method (TCM). The existence value (31 millions) of the park is the rest amount enters into the market economy i.e. cost of travel. Therefore, it may be concluded that the total value of the park is large in the context of social value.

Geospatial Approach for Managing Relocation and Distribution of Tigers

The Indian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris Linn. 1758), one of the world’s most endangered umbrella carnivore species, is now thought to be in the verge of extinction in the wild. Sariska National Park in India is considered to be a highly suitable habitat for the tigers. However, in 2005, due to extensive poaching there were no tigers left in this park. There is some hope of further relocation of tigers from other parts of India in order to conserve them well under the prevailing conditions. The aim of the study is to model the tiger habitat suitability with the current human impacts with integrated Geospatial technology. Our study used topographical and anthropogenic variables to construct a habitat suitability model for tigers in this park. According to our model, there are areas of suitable habitat for tigers within the park. The corresponding weights for the parameters are defined by knowledge-based approach determined by field study and literature survey and thereafter by applying MCDA where AHP (crisp and fuzzy) is applied. The resulting weights imported in GIS mode and the map obtained from MCDA model in GIS shows the optimum location for the site suitability for the tiger.

A set of criteria were defined to evaluate tree planting sites. After defining the criteria, next step was to selecting suitable indicators and variables to measure the selected criteria for analysis. Later on these criteria were ranked using the pair wise comparison method of multi criteria analysis and results was integrated into GIS. The study aimed at estimating runoff and sediment yield by using remote sensing and GIS techniques in catchment. Thematic layers of soil, topographic elevation, slope, land use/land cover (LULC) were generated in GIS platform by using existing soil map, SRTM DEM, and IRS-P4 satellite imagery. The GIS-based soil map was used to develop hydrologic soil group (HSG) map of the study area. HSG and LULC maps were used to generate curve number (CN) map in the GIS environment. Weighted CN value under antecedent moisture condition (AMC) type I, II and III for catchment was computed based on the GIS-based CN map, which were used to compute annual surface runoff. Furthermore, GIS-based maps of six USLE model factors, R, K, L, S, C and P, were generated. Raster maps of the six USLE factors were multiplied to estimate sediment yield on pixel basis.

The most complex GIS data are three dimensional terrain data in GIS applications, for a realistic representation of a terrain, the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is not suitable for direct use in on-line GIS services due to its large size and inflexibility data structure. Image compression is a key factor to improve transmission speed and storage, but it risks losing relevant terrain information. Very little work has been done till date on the GIS terrain data compression based on second generation wavelets. Second generation wavelet technology provides an efficient compression tool to achieve high compression ratio while maintaining an acceptable fidelity of surface quality. This book presents a new data compression technique using lifting scheme based on second generation wavelets. The lifting scheme has been found to be a flexible method for constructing scalar wavelets with desirable properties. In this book, it is extended to the GIS data compression. A newly developed data compression approach to approximate the terrain surface with a series of non-overlapping triangles has been presented.

A systematic approach of seismic microzonation is explained in this book. A case study conducted is described with results and discussion. In the present study, seismic hazard analysis of political capital city of Kerala, south India is carried out using deterministic approach. Using the vulnerable source ground motion is simulated by stochastic finite fault simulation method. The ground motion is simulated at rock level for 100 sites within the study area. Using the Geographic Information System (GIS) software the rock level acceleration is mapped for study area. The influence of local soil condition on ground motion is studied by one- dimensional ground response analysis. The results obtained from seismic hazard analysis and ground response analysis at 100 locations of the study area is used to prepare the microzonation maps of the city in GIS environment.

As a topic, GIS is also a rarely researched topic and I hope this book will provide insight and precedence in this area of new media. The study used two data collection methods: in-depth interviews and a Web survey. The in-depth interviews revealed factors that will influence the diffusion of GIS, including the availability of map data, competition between media agencies, the ease of getting management to buy GIS once its functionality has been demonstrated to them, and the general use of secondary GIS products. The Web survey showed that 63 percent of the reporters were aware of GIS but only 11 percent of the reporters surveyed currently use GIS. OLS regression showed that men were more likely to adopt GIS than women, while younger people were more likely to adopt GIS than their older counterparts. The results also showed that reporters who used other technologies in their work were more likely to adopt GIS on a trial basis.

Flood inundation mapping is an important tool for municipal and urban growth planning, emergency action plans, flood insurance rates and ecological studies. Mapping floodplain is a crucial component in flood risk reduction measures. With the companion GIS utility especially Arc-GIS and HEC-GeoRAS, the present work performs a flood inundation mapping study using HEC-RAS and presented a case study on Gorakhpur City and its environ. Gorakhpur city and its peri-urban areas are infamous for frequent flood hazard. Being situated on the floodplain of the lower Rapti river basin, it comes under the flat middle Ganga plains, India. The study used a vector based GIS and DEM in order to delineate watershed boundaries and predict areas of possible inundation during a flood event in and around the city of Gorakhpur. Steady flow analysis was performed and flood extent was then simulated based on those derived parameters and different flood peak scenarios were generated using 2, 25, 50 and 100 year return period. The book is useful for scholars working in the field of hydrology, urban planning, geography, and GIS.

The current work aims at developing a prototype application model for providing archaeological/historical information of cultural-heritage sites like Didyma. The useful information (2D thematic maps, text, images, graphics, audio along with 3D virtual reconstruction models) of the temple was prepared from exiting raw historical data (maps, aerial image as well as other ancillary information) mainly using common GIS functionalities of ESRI products (ArcMap, ArcPad) and VRML. The visitors equipped with a small handheld computer (PDA), GPS and a display unit (see-through or head-mounted display) would be able to navigate and experience the real site while appreciating the useful historical information as well as visualization of 3D virtual reconstruction onto the natural field of view of a certain point/region of interest of the temple site. The present work provides host of new insights/ideas for making the ancient sites more attractive for tourists by utilizing the advanced/innovative technologies of outdoor Augmented Reality, GIS, 3D Visualization, Real Time Navigation using GPS, Mobile Computing, and Multi-modal interactions instead of rebuilding the historical remains.

Recreational Water Quality Status In Chittagong City, Bangladesh

Recreational waters are those natural waters used not only for primary contact activities, such as swimming, windsurfing, and waterskiing, but also for secondary contact activities, such as boating and fishing. Recreational water quality criteria are used to assess the safety of water to be used for swimming and other water-sport activities. The primary concern is to protect human health by preventing water pollution from faecal material or from contamination by micro-organisms that could cause gastro-intestinal illness, ear, eye or skin infections. This study was conducted to learn about the quality status of the water at recreational spots in Chittagong City these are Foy’s Lake, Chittagong Shisu Park, Karnafuly Shisu Park, Zia Smriti Complex, Zatishonga Park andf Vatiary Lake. Derived parameters are Conductivity, Turbidity, Color, Odor, PH, Dissolve Oxygen, Biological Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Sulfate and Nitrate of the collected water samples were compared with the standard value of the respective parameters. The study suggests that most of the collected samples satisfied the required level of the expected parameters used for recreational purposes.

This study was aimed at identifying the current physical land suitability for maize, wheat and sorghum in Jello watershed under Chiro woreda in accordance to the FAO (1976) framework for LE to perform land suitability evaluation and carry out suitability mapping with the help of GIS tools and to compare the LU practiced with the findings of this study. Relevant land quality (LQ) and land characteristics (LCs) data on climate, topography and soil following medium intensity soil survey technique were collected and the analysis was held by using GIS tools after converting the data into a usable format for the LE process.Consequently through the querying analysis, the suitability rating process was run for individual LCs and based on the maximum limitation method, the overall suitability was assigned for specific land mapping units (LMUs) and displayed as suitability map with the integration of GIS.

This book assessed the conflict management and community development initiatives of Buffer Zone in Chitwan district of Nepal during the year 2007-2008. The sample was selected by using stratified random sampling technique. Eighty tourists were selected randomly to evaluate the recreational value of Chitwan National Park. It was found that the major causes of conflict were insufficient natural resources collection period, ineffectiveness of animal preventive measures, inadequate compensation to human, domestic animals and crop damage and monsoon flooding. The tourism created the local employment opportunities to local people but it was unplanned and location specific. To enhance conflict management efficiently, the policy recommendations are made focusing the major conflicting issues in natural resource sharing. Similarly, an annual direct benefit of the park was found NRs. 346 million in 2007-2008. The study examined how much Park visitors were willing to pay to visit the Park. Annual benefits from the Park were considerable - the total annual consumer surplus obtained from recreation in the Park was approximately NRs. 233 million.

In this thesis, the first investigation into reclaimed water was on lemon trees (Chapter II). The aim of this work was to study the effects of reclaimed water on lemon tree performance. This research was to compare two sources of treated wastewater, one obtained with a secondary treatment (Cartagena) and the other with a tertiary treatment blending with well water (Campotejar), and to study their effects on soil chemical properties, on the leaf mineral status, crop production and fruit quality and safety.The main objectives of the second study were to evaluate the combined effects of different irrigation water qualities and the regulated deficit irrigation strategies on mandarin tree crop under Mediterranean climate and their effects on plant physiology and leaf mineral status, soil chemical properties and water content, yield and fruit quality (Chapter III). The last work was based in the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as a tool in the planning and management of water reuse projects (Chapter IV). The work was developed with the aims at identifying potential sites for reclaimed water use, using a GIS- based multi-criteria analysis.
