Body dissatisfaction is a common emotion in women, and female body images published in women''s magazines serve as the ideal body standards for some women. The purpose of this content analysis was to ascertain how Caucasian undergraduate female coders would rank the female body images presented in women''s fashion, health, and fashion and health-related magazines viewed most often by female undergraduate students as listed in Simmons Market Research Bureau (2003). Samples of the photographic images presented in the 12 women''s magazines for June 2005 and samples of the archived 1995 and 2000 issues of these 12 magazines were evaluated by the coders. Furthermore, samples of the female photographic images presented in four May and three June 1950 magazines were also ranked by the coders. This content analysis uses a rating scale to rank female body images that are systematically random sampled from women''s magazines. The findings indicate body images vary significantly from 1950 to 2005 and 1995 to 2005. Furthermore, at least 90 percent of the sampled images from the 1995, 2000, and 2005 magazine titles were ranked thin.

Small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV) affect sheep and goats. Though in many cases clinical signs are hardly noticeable, infections in both species may produce economic losses due to an insidious drop in milk production, weight loss or decrease in progeny. Diagnosis is problematic because there is no ‘gold standard’ diagnostic test and the inconvenience in obtaining blood samples. This book supplies evidence that milk is an adequate sample for diagnosis instead of blood, especially for serology, and that a serological method, such as ELISA, should be used in combination with a molecular biology method, such as PCR, for a more accurate diagnosis. This may be related to the different role played by SRLV-specific antibodies in sheep and goats. The book also describes the results of one of the first studies using milk instead of blood to estimate seroprevalence of SRLV in the central region of Spain, as well as the most recent prevalence study in this area, the risk factors which may affect SRLV infection, and to what degree productivity may be affected. All these data should aid farmers, laboratory diagnosis and researchers in controlling SRLV infections.

The diagnosis of time of death is often complex and it is even more difficult in the case of a fetus dead in-utero affected by macerative post-mortal phenomena. The criteria currently available in scientific literature can turn to be inappropriate or useless in clinical practice, where the medical examiner often experience a complete mismatch between morphological and clinical data. The present work arises from the necessity to update these thanatological criteria. After a review of the literature so far, the actual validity of thanatological criteria has been assessed through a retrospective stury of a selected population. Thereafter it has been developed an experimental prospective phase with an experimental macerative protocol, in order to identify possible stages of cell degeneration positively correlated to the time of death: interesting data emerged from the electron-microscopy analysis as a progressive vacuolization of cell structures within 24-hours after death. This work should be especially useful to medical examiners, forensic pathologists and gynecologists who want to better understand fetal death for forensic or clinical purposes.

The purpose was to investigate the possibility of using aerial or satellite images or eventually digital elevation models in order to localize the UAV helicopter in the environment. Matching techniques were investigated in order to match the available on-board image of the area with the live images acquired by the on-board video camera. The research was in the context of the development of an integrated system for navigation using image sequences from an aircraft. The system is composed of relative position estimation, which computes the current position of the helicopter by accumulating relative displacement extracted from successive aerial images. These successive aerial images are then matched using certain image matching techniques. The methodology for image registration used were basic search on images by overlapping the images and calculating goodness of match and Hausdorff distance.

The dimensionality of the retrievable analytes content directly affects the impact that chemical cytometry can have on these fields. Consequently, the number of different analytes that can be identified and their subcellular localization are of significant importance. We present an electrical lysis based approach to selectively lyse only the plasma membrane of a single cell. This method permits analysis of the dissolved cytoplasm and reduces contributions from the nucleus and membrane bound fractions of the cell analytes. A microfluidic device provides the enabling technological platform to perform the electrical lysis on a single cell while allowing a high degree of control over the cell's movement and location.

In Senegal, in 2005 and according to the National Health Accounts, Medical Biologys pending were estimated at 4.5 billion franc CFA. Unlike drugs, very few studies have been conducted to assess the cost of medical biology acts in the care of patients. It is for this reason that we decided to determine the cost of these acts performed in the laboratory of Biochemistry, Aristide Le Dantec Hospital, Dakar, Senegal (National Referral hospital). This study was conducted over a period of three (3) months. This is a retrospective cross sectional study in analytical target on the calculation of the cost of Biochemistry examinations. The method used is the ABC method based on the identification of all activities for the determination of product costs. The target was the director of the hospital administration.

Image segmentation is an essential step in many advanced imaging applications, e.g., object tracking, pattern recognition, volume measurements, medical image analysis, and in the image guided procedures. Among the several types of images, magnetic resonance images (MRI), which represent the intensity variation of radio waves generated by biological systems when exposed to radio frequency pulses, have proved to be an effective imaging modality for imaging the inner tissues of the human. In this work, we have introduce new multiresolution algorithms for image segmentation that extend the well-known Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm. The conventional EM algorithm has prevailed many other segmentation algorithms because of its simplicity and performance. However, it is found to be highly sensitive to noise. Multiresolution analysis has been used in order to take into account the effect of neighborhood pixels in the classification process to minimizes the sensitivity to noise. Different data sets were used to measure the performance of the proposed algorithms. The results show that the performance of the proposed algorithms has much increased over the conventional EM.

Extraction, segmentation and analysis of pulmonary vessels from computed tomography (CT) images of the human chest is an important topic for a wide range of applications in medical image analysis. We present a pulmonary vessel extraction and segmentation algorithm which is fast, fully automatic and robust against noise. It uses a segmentation of the airway tree and a left and right lung labeled volume to restrict the response of an offset medialness vessel enhancement filter. We test our algorithm on phantom data as well as on the VESSEL12 challenge dataset. Our clinical focus is on the detection of pulmonary hypertension (PH), which is a chronic disorder of the pulmonary circulation, marked by an elevated mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP). On a dataset containing 24 patients from a clinical pulmonary hypertension pilot study, we show that quantitative indices derived from the segmented pulmonary vessels correlate with the mPAP and are applicable to distinguish patients with and without PH.
