Information Need of the Rural Families: A Study in Nagra Block (U.P.)

Information need is an individual or group's desire to locate and obtain information to satisfy a conscious or unconscious need. Although we know the potential of rural sector, we have not given due importance to rural information services. Now the time is ripe when we can no longer ignore the information needs of the rural people. Rural people are not only in need of the information regarding agriculture and animal husbandry but they are also interested in all kinds of information which can help them in their development. To bridge the gap between the elite and the poor, it is necessary to put emphasis on the information need fulfilling development messages. Mass media like T.V., Radio, Newspaper and Magazines can play very important role in communicating need based messages to rural masses. There is no doubt that mass media can bring development in rural area provided media personnel produce and transmit need based information. Media can be made more effective if background information of rural people, media availability with rural people and media utilization pattern of rural people is known to the media managers and development agencies.

Urban areas are growing at a very fast pace. Hence, Planning, development and management of urban areas, especially in the developing countries gain prime importance.Accuracy of the information is the prime requirement for Planning, development and management of the land parcels especially in the urban areas where the land is scarce. Hence there is a need to organize spatial information system for urban planning and management. A land information system gives support to land planning and management by providing information about the land, the resources upon it and the improvements made to it. Already existing Information systems like National Urban Information System (NUIS), Land Management Information System (LMIS) and Spatial Data Infrastructure(SDI) has been studied and found to be devoid of certain information for effective utilization.Hence an Integrated Information System with comprehensive land information system has been developed for urban planning, development and management at different Planning Levels. In addition, a plot level L.I.S has been generated in Geographical Information System (GIS) platform for effective implementation.

Design-Reality Gaps in Open Source Information Systems Development

This book, Design-Reality Gaps in Open Source Information Systems Development, presents a theoretical and empirically informed analysis of Free Open Source Software (FOSS) development in the domain of health and education information systems in Tanzania. Historically, FOSS development has been driven by user-developer communities who are also the users of FOSS applications. Information Systems (IS) are characterised by distinctive users and developers communities as separate groups. The use of FOSS in IS domain has received limited attention in the FOSS literature. The FOSS development approach, as well as the justifications for using FOSS in the infrastructure domain where users are developers, are inherently problematic when applied in the IS domain in developing countries. There is an urgent need to identify alternative conceptualisations of the FOSS phenomenon suitable to the goals and context of information systems in developing countries. The book focuses on the analysing the interplay between the sociotechnical conditions of IS in developing countries and the FOSS development approach.

Information is one of Several Basic Resources that are needed and utilized by human beings for their development and prosperity. The exact nature of Information is not easy to describe. Perhaps the most explicit definition in the Literature defines information as recorded experience that is used in decision-making. Information has now become a vital resource. There is no field of human activity wherein in information is not a component. Whether it is research and development, business and industry, government affairs, education and training; the information has to be acquired, processed, retrieved, and disseminated for communication. Indeed the effectiveness of performance in all these spheres of activity Depends largely upon the availability of information at the right time in adequate quality and quantity. The matching of information needs to sources of information has to be based on the careful assessment of information needs. Use of information, use behavior in gathering information, expressed needs of information, gaps in information supply, types of information requirements to meet variety of use has become the focus of study today.

Therefore it proposed to investigate the existing local knowledge and information needs of a community and classifying them into a retrievable form of knowledge, designing a model CIDS and trialling it. In the process the potential of CIDS for community development and consequent community empowerment were assessed and a refined model CIDS developed. The purpose behind the study is to link Information Technology (IT), as the new tool guarding the entrance to the Information Age, with the current level of community development and community empowerment in the CLCs. The central place of Information, and hence of CIDS, was therefore critical to the outcomes of this study. Several concepts in the Research Questions needed defining in terms of how they were studied. Hence ‘community', ‘community development', ‘empowerment', ‘community empowerment' and ‘information' were defined. Their relevance to the circumstances existing in Thailand were explained and then applied to the microcosm of the four provinces which comprise the ICN.

Year 7 students, information literacy and transfer

Given the extensive use of ICT in schools across the world, today's students need to be information literate, independent learners. This book presents a review of information literacy in schools, including students' use of the web, and focuses on the key issue of transfer. It is often assumed that students will transfer information literacy practices across subject and time, but this study shows that most students are unlikely to transfer these practices. This book will be useful for school policy makers, teachers and teacher librarians, as it presents evidence of how a rethinking of the teaching of information literacy, and the development of a culture of transfer, will contribute to the development of information literate students. The book includes a substantial literature review on information literacy and transfer, and the study's methodology and findings. A grounded theory of information literacy and transfer in schools is then presented.

Agricultural Information Needs of the Rural Farmers in Tanzania

The vital role played by scientific and technical information for agricultural and industrial development in developing countries is still neglected and accorded a lower status compared to other sectors. Most smallholder growers in Africa lack access to modern processing technology and market information as a result, farmers sell their produce at very low prices. This is the big challenge facing farmers in Tanzania. Studies show that lack of timely access to information is a major obstacle to agricultural development. Small- scale farmers need relevant and current information at the right time in order to increase their productivity. This book, therefore, will be a basis for influencing policy makers to develop agriculture policies and information systems that focus on the needs of small- scale farmers to improve their productivity. Also the book will contribute to a better understanding of the information needs of small- scale farmers in Tanzania. The book will also create awareness of the problems facing small- scale farmers in accessing agricultural information and the recommended solutions to the problems.

Manage Enterprise Knowledge Systematically

This book presents a methodology for the design and development of Knowledge Management systems to support New Product Development based on Enterprise Architecture Frameworks (EAFs). The project focuses on information system specifications driven by business and knowledge users’ requirements in the automotive industry. The aim of this research is to extend the capabilities of the latest EAFs so that not only data and information, but also enterprise knowledge can be managed. A formal methodology has been developed based on the extended EAF, and implemented as easy-to-use folders for the management of product development knowledge. A guideline in the form of a flowchart has been developed using a process modelling tool called Design Roadmap. A case study in an automotive product development company proved that the developed methodology can be used to produce the functional specifications of their IT systems to include knowledge management capability. The system specification can then be used, either to assess a company’s existing information systems for future system improvement; or as a guide to developing and implementing complete new information/Knowledge Management systems.

Projects; The Cutting Edge of Development

All countries have national plans that spell a range of economic and social objectives and strategies meant to enhance growth and development. Projects provide an important means by which investment and other development expenditures foreseen in the plans can be clarified, justified, and realized. Development plans and projects are closely interlinked since sound development plans require good projects as just good projects require sound planning. For effective planning, to this effect, availability and access to a wide range of information on existing and potential investments and their likely effects on growth and other national objectives is crucial. Project analysis, thus, seeks and provides the necessary information for national development plan and the projects selected for implementation then become vehicles for using resources to create new income or wealth in the developing economy.Very importantly, this learning resource tries to give readers broader insights about the bridges of development projects and other issues deemed very important for national development plans and programs.
