India is one of the first country who developing relation with the European Union. The EU is India's largest trading partner accounting one-fifth share in both export and import. Several agreements have been signed between the EU and India in the past few years, resulting in even more imports and exports, both of goods and services. This book analyses the trade relations between India and the European Union during 1990 to 2005. Chronology of Indo-EU trade since 1990 and different agreements to boost bilateral trade have been analysed in detail in this book, the comparison between India and EU, concerned to economy, currency, foreign trade etc. In conclusion there is no need for India to feel intimidated by the magnitude of the single market or its importance in world trade. Outside the developed world, India will remain one of the world's two or three largest and still expanding imports markets. India's principal needs are advanced technology and range of India's requirements will command the competing attention of rival suppliers. This would give India sufficient bargaining strength. Finally some suggestions are noted for improvement of India's trade relations with EU.

The recent shift to lower growth, rising unemployment, renewed European integration, neo-liberalism, and globalization has challenged this "European Model" and the unions' place in it. These essays, written by some of the leading scholars in the field, examine responses of six major European union movements to the dramatic changes in economic and political conditions in the last two decades. Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Lehrstuhl für internationale Politik und Außenpolitik), language: English, abstract: At the beginning of the 21st century, the international system is characterised by ever increasing interdependence, forcing actors to re-organise their relations. The new overlapping foreign policy instruments and cooperation formats on a bilateral, (sub)regional, interregional and multilateral level, in which states pursue different strategies for the assertion of interests, result in constellations that can be favourable but are often problematic for the conclusion of free trade agreements (FTAs). The EU, only recently having started to develop a common foreign policy and institutionalising relations with partners on a bilateral, interregional and multilateral level, is not free from this problem. Following an incoherent foreign trade policy, in which it shifts from bilateral (South Africa) to interregional (South East Asia) an mixed strategies (South America), the Union faces challenges in the conclusion of interregional FTAs. A current example is the ongoing bloc-to-bloc trade negotiations with the MERCOSUL (Mercado Comum do Sul in Portuguese or Common Market of the South in English) countries and the recent establishment of a bilateral SP with the MERCOSUL member Brazil that aims at cooperation on several topics, including trade. This paper shall investigate the trade integration between Turkey and the EU. The plan of the book is as follows. At first the historical background of the development concerning the trade relations between the two parties is conveyed. This includes the period from first association to implementing a customs union (CU) between Turkey and the European Union (EU) and to deeper integration abolishing barriers of trade until today.Subsequently an evaluation of the influence of the customs union follows in chapter 3 which constitutes the main part of the paper. Hereby the analysis is divided into the short-term static and long-term dynamic effects of the CU with the EU that Turkey entered on 1st January 1996. To analyze the static effects this paper adopts Viner's traditional approach, by comparing the trade creation effects with the trade diversion effects resulting from the removal of trade restrictions for Turkey and the EU as a whole. Thus, the predominant economical theory applied in this paper is the neoclassical customs union theory. This theory was chosen because it still is the predominant and widely recognized theory in analyzing trade data providing a variety of tools. Within the neoclassical theory Ricardo as well as Heckscher-Ohlin play an important role as a tool of analysis. In the relevant passages in the text the most important theoretical principles will be explained with the help of the Turkish example. At the limits of the neoclassical theories the new trad...

Thesis (M.A.) from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2.0, University of Flensburg, language: English, abstract: The Eastern enlargement of the European Union in 2004 alongside the accession in 2007 of Bulgaria and Romania into the European Union has paved way for a historical shift of the Union , emergence of new borders, and emergence of new relations and policies towards new neighbours. Despite the fact that the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) might be considered as a foreign policy instrument, what seems unknown and less considered is the cost of relationship, intent of the European Union (EU) in relations with new members, interest of both sides, security and stability alongside economic and democratic space. The ENP consolidates the opinion that the limits of Europe is increasingly evasive; the thesis therefore aims at considering or analyzing the EU relations in the view of its implications stemming from the ENP policy toward Ukraine as a member of the ENP.

Essay aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Europäische Union, Note: 1,3, King`s College London, Veranstaltung: EU and the Middle East - Economics, Politics and Peace, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Historically, in contrast to trade relations, political relations between Western Europe and Iran were predominated with inconsistency and controversy. The Critical Dialogue was the first official European uniform approach towards Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution and it was conducted in line with the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) enshrined in the Maastricht Treaty in 1992. The framework was based on two contradictory trends: the perception of Iran as an important economic partner and the growing importance of human rights in relations with third countries. Iranian failure to adhere to international norms in the area of human rights represented an obstacle to its recognition as a fully legitimate economic and political partner. The Critical Dialogue contrasted with the United States (US) 'active containment' policy of economic boycotts and was referred by critics as an 'immoral cover for maintaining lucrative commercial relations with Iran'. Chapter 2 examines developments of the political and economic relations between EU-3 and Iran after the 1979 Iranian Revolution. It seeks to answer the question: 'Which are the circumstances leading to the positive expectations of relations between Iran and Western Europe a...

Although detailed accounts of the fur-trade era have appeared, until recently the rich social history has been ignored. In this book, the fur trade is examined not simply as an economic activity but as a social and cultural complex that was to survive for nearly two centuries. The author traces the development of a mutual dependency between Indian and European traders at the economic level that evolved into a significant cultural exchange as well. Marriages of fur traders to Indian women created bonds that helped advance trade relations. As a result of these "many tender ties," there emerged a unique society derived from both Indian and European culture.

This dissertation deals with the question of the EU's external influence on transforming societies. Is the external influence coherent with internal claims? Trade is the EU's most important external policy area. The EU is an economic giant based on the largest single market in the world. Thus the EU has power in and through trade. The EU makes increasingly the adaptation of normative standards acondition to access its market. Does the EU integrate also standards on gender equality? And does the EU transform gender regimes globally through trade? What impacts does the EU have on gender regimes? This dissertation examines gender impacts in the Sustainability Impact Assessments that show possible impacts of trade agreements between the EU and its partners. The analysis shows that gender is secondary to economic growth and not directed towards gender equality. As aconsequence the EU does not use its power through trade and the coherence of internal and external efforts is questionable.

The difficulty in this approach is to ensure an economic integration of both countries on the basis of bilateral treaties, despite differing cultural, social and economic attitudes. As an effect of the continuing globalization and the increased international interconnectedness, there is generally a rising number of international free trade agreements among countries with the intention to achieve economic growth and welfare that on the other hand simultaneously led to an increased amount of criticism arising from non-governmental organizations, consumer protection organizations or environmental groups. This oppositeness has received a lot of attention during the recent negotiations and implementation of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between the European Union and Canada. Similar to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), which is a foreseen free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States that has been temporarily suspended due to huge protests, both agreements have in common that they bear more criticism that than any other free trade agreement ever before. The first chapter introduces EMU from a European perspective, as the next logical step to complete the Single Market and as a source of economic advantages for EU member states. However, it is also an important vehicle for the aim of political union. Hence, in view of Germany′s traditional position in Europe, the progress EMU represents in terms of achieving European unity is a significant factor that led to the unequivocal attitude of the Kohl government favour of EMU.The absolute necessity for Germany to advance the integration process was emphasised by German unification and the resulting political impossibility to refuse EMU as international support for a unified Germany was tied to stronger European integration. In addition, the common currency has benefits for Germany′s foreign trade reliant economy which seem to outweigh the economic doubts. Nevertheless, these concerns did play a role in defining political approaches and have influenced both the opposition′s stance and ...

On February 10, 1971 a historical stage was set between China and Nigeria, one of not only bilateral relations but of mutual respect for each other. Recent developments in China and Nigeria relationship are not unconnected with the renewed ties between the two giants as Nigeria has become one of China's most important trading partners in Africa. The contributors to this volume assess the impact of this historical development on gender relations in the new and old EU member states. Instead of focusing on either western or eastern Europe, this book investigates the similarities and differences in diverse parts of Europe. Although initially limited, gender equality was part of the original framework of the European Union, an organization often more open than national governments to feminist demands, as this volume illustrates with case studies from eastern and western Europe. The enlargement process thus provides some important policy instruments for increasing equality between men and women.Silke Roth obtained her Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Connecticut. This timely book investigates the complex relations between the Republic of Poland and the Slovak Republic in the context of ongoing processes in the European Union's political and economic system. The basic assumption of the study is that Polish-Slovak relations are affected and shaped not only by the interaction between the two of them but also by the dynamics of the European and global international environment. The authors explore different aspects of the interconnectedness of Warsaw and Bratislava. This includes the analysis of political, economic, and social dimensions of bilateral relations in the multilateral context. One of the goals of this volume is to define areas and spheres of Poland's and Slovakia's common interest, as well as to point out those areas with the highest potential for development. It also defines and analyzes problematic issues in common relations that could be seen as obstacles in developing cooperation in specific areas and politically strategic areas like foreign and security policy. Moreover, the book seeks to measure the extent to which Polish-Slovak relations are affected by the European integration process.

The assumption is that there are continuous patterns of intra-industry trade within and outside the product categories the Northern and the Southern country trade with each other most commonly. However, they only represent a fraction of the otherwise dominating inter-industry type of trade. By analysing a case study of the bilateral trade between Germany and Nigeria, it is found that the nature of intra-industry trade is governed by two central causes: 1) the minor diversification of the Nigerian economy and low levels of trade in non-mineral products and 2) the revitalisation of traditional inter-industry trade dynamics brought about by the gradual move towards a Euro-African Free Trade Area.

Barbour explores the economic, social, legal, cultural, and political significance of the fort which was the brainchild of Kenneth McKenzie and Pierre Chouteau, Jr., and a part of John Jacob Astor's fur trade empire. From 1830 to 1867, Fort Union symbolized the power of New York and St. Louis, and later, St. Paul merchants' capital in the West. The most lucrative post on the northern plains, Fort Union affected national relations with a number of native tribes, such as the Assiniboine, Cree, Crow, Sioux, and Blackfeet. It also influenced American interactions with Great Britain, whose powerful Hudson's Bay Company competed for Upper Missouri furs.Barbour shows how Indians, mixed-bloods, Hispanic-, African-, Anglo-, and other Euro-Americans living at Fort Union created a system of community law that helped maintain their unique frontier society. Many visiting artists and scientists produced a magnificent graphic and verbal record of events and people at the post, but the old-time world of fur traders and Indians collapsed during the Civil War when political winds shifted in favor of Lincoln's Republican Party. In 1865 Chouteau lost his trade license and sold Fort Union to new operators, who had little interest in maintaining the post's former culture. With the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the threat of international terrorism - a threat to peace and stability - became evident to the world.Even though this event was not directed against European Union member states, it triggered the expansion of common anti-terrorist laws and policies. This cooperation aimed at fighting terrorism has led to the introduction of legal instruments that do not comply with international and European human rights law. Despite this drastic shift, the question in how far the European Union abides by human rights law in its fight against terrorism has rarely been discussed so far. Irina Wiegand looks exactly at this question. Her book gives extensive background information and yet has high scholarly value. It offers a general introduction on terrorism and an overview of today's legal framework with regard to terrorism and looks at the European Union's responses to terrorism. The main focus of the book is then on the analysis of these responses in the light of human rights law. This scrutiny provides the background of international and regional human rights legislation and continues with the analysis of the current legal practice of the European Union and the European Courts. If you want to know why we cannot agree on the definition of the term 'terrorism', whether states can claim the right of self-defense after a terrorist attack, how the European anti-terrorist legislation developed over time, and whether the European Union violates c...

The strategy, focus and practical approach of this EU trade policy has been continuously adapted to the new circumstances in an ever more globalised world economy. Thus, the EU uses its foreign trade policy not just for mere economic ends but also as a tool to strengthen its global political influence.Having been a champion of multilateral trade negotiations in the framework of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) throughout the 1990s, the has EU changed this strategic orientation by the mid-2000s shifting its trade policy focus from a multilateral to a bilateral strategy and initiated preferential free trade agreements (FTA) with countries and regions all over the world. Among them, the one with the largest size was the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) with the United States of America, launched in 2013.Given the huge importance of the EU as a player in global trade, it seems relevant to examine from a political scientific perspective what have been the main reasons, drivers and motivations behind this enormous policy shift. It demonstrates that the fundamentals of classical and neoclassical theories are still relevant today, albeit they have been adjusted and developed. Modern theorists explain international trade with more realistic approaches, such as Krugman et al.'s New Trade Theory or Porter's theory of National Competitive Advantage. The New Trade Theory includes the existence of increasing return of scale to describe and analyze world trade more accurately. Porter's theory of National Competitive Advantage explains international trade as a consequence of productivity differences between nations due to diverse environments and cultures within economies. Dunning and Porter take a globalized world economy into account in order to describe today's trade. The classical theories of Ricardo and Heckscher-Ohlin are limited in describing today's inter-national trade. However, they are still important factors which contribute to the explanation of real-world trade relations. Ricardo's theory describes inter-industry trade which in fact exists between Northern and Southern economies. The relevance of the approach as an explanation of global trade has to be limited due to the fact th...

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Macro-economics, general, grade: B, University of Southern Denmark, language: English, abstract: The aim of this work is to assess the factors that have been affecting the imbalances of trade within countries of the European Union. The analysis takes into consideration the elements that could affect the balance of trade, thus saving or investment. The variables that are included in the panel data framework are related to productivity, inflation, consumption, wage level, capital movements, demography of the population, economic growth, public and private debt levels. A panel data, that leaves out countries from East Europe, is created, and takes values that go from 2002 to 2013. The panel data shows that technology gaps and capital movements have been the main factors that affected the balance of trade of the peripheral countries. Peripheral countries did not invest enough in projects that could enhance the productivity, leading to a competitiveness loss that was not followed by a correction of the wage levels. Moreover, capital movements have been financing consumption surges in Greece and Portugal, whereas in Spain and Ireland those capitals have fueled credit booms and house bubbles. Therefore, those countries have been experiencing a worsening of their balance of trade, and investors have not been willed anymore to finance additional debt. Indeed, Members of the euroarea could not guarantee that the central ...

The book thus contributes to political science research on interest representation and Europeanization as well as sociological research on labor relations.

Marie Kreipe Genetically Modified Food. Trade Regulation in view of Environmental Policy Objectives

The controversial issue of genetically modified (GM) food is discussed in this book. While the United States (US) is a strong supporter of GM technology having adopted a rather lax regulation of trade with GM products, the European Union (EU) is representing a sceptical position towards this new technology and has even imposed a de facto moratorium on further approval of GM products from 1998 to 2004. The purpose of this book is an extensive analysis of the current status on risks and benefits of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and a suggestion on how an appropriate regulation of GM products could be derived. Potential guidelines are provided for policy formulation both in a qualitative and in a quantitative dimension. The US is applying the principle of substantial equivalence, which means that GM products are in their substance identical to products produced by conventional methods. Therefore, no new regulations are necessary for the trade with GM products. In contrast, the European Union (EU) disagrees that GM products are equivalent to their conventional counterparts due to the different production process. Instead, the EU refers to the precautionary principle in its GMO policy, meaning that trade with GM products should be restricted until it will be proven that no additional risks are implied by the use of these products. The divergence of opinions about the right policy to regulate GM products has significant impacts on trade flows and welfare effects. The US and...

Seminar paper from the year 2014 in the subject Politics - Basics and General, grade: A, University of Auckland, course: European Environmental Law & Governance, language: English, abstract: The European Union (EU) ranks at the top of the list of global importers of wild animal and plant products. The estimated declared import value of the legal trade in wildlife products is worth billions of euros a year, and the extent of the EU market for wildlife products increases annually. The demand for wildlife animals and products is escalating worldwide. The majority of the wildlife trade into and within the EU is being exercised within the boundaries of the law, however illegal wildlife trade still occurs. Every year the enforcement authorities in the EU make over 5000 seizures. This illegal trafficking does not take into account sustainability concerns and may therefore result in the extinction of a species. Factors such as very high prices for wildlife products on the black market, low political awareness and low penalties aggravate the unsustainable and illegal trade. At the level of the EU many significant achievements in combating illegal wildlife trafficking have been accomplished. The biggest example of that are the EU Wildlife Trade Regulations, which implement the obligations for its member states under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). More in-depth national, regional and international cooperation could even e...

Given the fact that the Union itself does not have the necessary resources at its disposal, it is dependent on other resource exporting countries - especially Russia. To become more independent from those countries, the EU follows a strategy of diversification of energy supplies and market liberalisation. In this context, the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), bringing together the EU and 16 of its Eastern and Southern neighbouring states, plays a significant role. But the rapprochement between the EU and its neighbours is problematic regarding relations with Russia, which see its interests in its traditional zone of influence threatened. Given the high dependence of European (and ENP) states on Russian gas, Russia was traditionally able to use energy deliveries (or rather their non-delivery) as a geostrategic tool to push through its interests. With the ENP, which enables the coordination of deliveries and pipeline projects with energy transit countries, the EU has developed a geostrategic tool to potentially reduce the Russian inf...

Master's Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 2,0, University of Münster (Institute of International Economics), language: English, abstract: While the traditional Trade Theory is merely able to explain trade between developed and less developed countries, the more recent literature of the New Trade Theory allows for capturing trade between countries that are all highly developed. One of its models - the Melitz model of intra-industry trade (2003)- incorporates heterogeneity in firm productivity into a framework based on Krugman (1980). The Melitz model is a corner stone of New Trade Theory models and has been extended in various papers to analyze intra-industry trade with respect to different aspects. One important aspect that is covered intensively in recent literature is the efect of unilateral trade liberalization on a country's welfare. This thesis presents the Melitz model (2003) by firstly illustrating its fundament based onKrugman (1980) and secondly deriving its working mechanisms both for opening for trade as well as for trade liberalization. Further, extensions by Melitz and Ottaviano (2005) and Demidova and Rodriguez-Clarez (2011) will be presented. The thesis concludes by discussing the contribution of the Melitz model to explain occurring trading patterns and its limitations.

As a response to the Great Depression in 1931 Germany adopted a policy of exchange control where the movement of foreign currency was subject to government control. This regime served as a defense measure against currency devaluation but it inhibbited international payments among exchange control countries.Trade between them was organized on the basis of bilateral clearing agreements, which centralized both foreign trade and payments at the state level. The book analyzes the clearing system in the case of Germany's relations with Bulgaria, which developed the highest trade dependence on Germany in the 1930s. An almost complete opposition of free trade, bilateral clearing is seen as a mechanism of political power maximization and resource allocation from the periphery to its core. Using Jonathan Kirshner's framework of monetary power the work offers a detailed analysis of the link between international monetary relations and political power. The shift of international trade regime from a Gold Standard and free trade to exchange control and bilateral clearing provided an opportunity for the German government to covertly finance its expenditure in the 1930's and during WWII.

After the cold war during the decades of development of democracies the role of sanctions as instruments of international relations has raised significantly. Through the evolution of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union the use of sanctions has also crystallized. Otherwise it remains always a question whether sanctions are justified? Are they effective? Is the application of sanctions the best way against human rights violation? Or sanctions are accompanied by human rights violation themselves? In my work I am looking for answers for these questions, focusing on the relation of sanctions and human rights. In my paper firstly I introduce the evolution of the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union and the development of EU sanction policy. I outline the legal basis of the sanctions and present the different types of restrictive measures and their relations to the United Nations' principles. Through case studies regarding Belarus, Sudan, Burma and Zimbabwe I present the use of different sanctions in order to ensure the respect of human rights. I also analyse whether these sanctions themselves violate to a certain extent human rights causing harm for the civil population or not. Finally, I give an overview about other soft measures of the European Union concerning the promotion of human rights.

This book tells the little known story about the decision for the Caribbean island of Tobago to form a unitary colony with the neighbouring island of Trinidad in 1889. It chronicles the path from its discovery by Columbus in 1498 through the European rivalry of the Spaniards, Dutch, French, Courlanders, (Latvians), Swedes, and British to its status as a British colony in 1814. It examines the effects of the emancipation of the slaves in 1834; the several changes to its constitution; the collapse of its economy dominated by the sugar industry and points to the conflict between the legislative and executive branches of the government as the source of its failure as a political entity. Tracing for the first time the growth of its relations with Trinidad, the book reproduces the principal records of the decisions in the legislatures of Tobago, of Trinidad and of the British parliament that created the union. The administrative issues of the period 1889-1899 and their resolution are discussed. The union is compared with the union of Scotland and England in 1707; the attitudes of modern historians to the decision examined; and the book ends with the author's evaluation of the decision making process. I would strongly recommend reading this book both as an historical account of past trade union responses to migrant workers and as a base for further investigation into the current situation in Europe. · CLR NewsIn spite of the great complexity of the subject matter this empirical study impresses the reader with its simple and clear structure ... Highly recommended. · Gewerkschaftliche MonatshefteEuropean trade unions are among the most influential and powerful institutions within Western economies, in many cases cooperating with the government and employers' associations in socio-economic decision-making processes. Consequently they also play an important role in the formulation of policies relating to immigration and the migrant workers, who are arriving and becoming part of the workforce the unions are representing and protecting against employers and other authorities. However, trade unions have not always fulfilled their role as the most obvious organization to defend the interests of foreign workers to the extent they could be expected. The reasons for this are complex and due to conflicts of interests that arise from their intermediary position between employers, government authorities, and indigenous workers. This volume offers a rich analysis of the situation in seven major European countries but also a comparison of the data found and an attempt to account for the differences established. It ends with some conclusions on the prospects of trade unions within the E...

This short book outlines the current activities of the largest transnational trade union organizations, and offers an explanation as to why they are not succeeding in their efforts to curtail the power of global capital. The paper employs Gramsci's notion of a historic bloc and van der Pijl's understanding of the class fractions to examine the dilemma faced by Global Unions in seeking to extend to the global level the industrial relations regimes secured throughout the advanced capitalist countries in the postwar period. It is argued that the historical conditions which afforded organized labour a relatively powerful role in postwar capitalist hegemony have disappeared, and that the current structure of global capitalist hegemony does not offer a similar opportunity for trade unions. By comparing the conditions that facilitated the creation of postwar industrial relations regimes to the current situation, the book hopes to illustrate the historical limitations of trade unionism as an effective form of resistance.

Objective of the negotiations is the generation of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the United States (U.S.) and the European Union (EU) to promote trade by reducing trade barriers, including tariff and non-tariff ones. In order to achieve this goal, several issue barriers have to be addressed, inter alia concerning non-tariff barriers including regulatory differences in the sectors of agriculture and food production. While the U.S. and the EU both have high standards concerning the consumer protection and food safety assessment, differences in the basic principle and implementation persist. Both countries pursue an agreement that follows the respective principles and still provides effective trade stimulation. However, based on the rooted differences in the particular food safety systems, challenges are inevitable. The objective of this study is the presentation of the U.S. and EU food safety system as well as special cases highlighting the differences between both systems in terms of risk assessment, prevention, responses and risk communication. The different factors are analyzed both theoretically and on the basis of practical examples. Additionally, the different matter...

This study identifies those characteristics and explores their linkages as perceived by European companies. In addition, their assessment of the FTA's impact on characteristics of the Korean business system and on their business activities are explored. This research is based on the socio-economic approach of business systems theories. In 2010, the global Fair Trade turnover reached €3.4 billion showing an upward trend with double-digit growing rates per year. One of the biggest selling markets for certified Fair Trade products is the European Union (EU) which is thus a crucial actor when it comes to promote and market Fair Trade goods (see attached table 1). Yet, besides the EU's effort of achieving a fairer international trading system, it can be argued that the EU might be even partially responsible for the misery in those countries. In this context the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the EU is controversially discussed. About €60 billion which account for 42% of the total EU budget are currently spent on agricultural subsidies. They are provided to European farmers to support and protect the internal agricultural market. Consequences for other agrarian countries are immense. In our research paper we want to investigate the paradox on Europe spending money on Fair Trade on the one hand, while dishing out harming subsidies on the other hand. We question whether it would be more beneficial for developing countries if Europe stepwise reduces its agricultu...

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: European Union, grade: 2,3, University of Passau, language: English, abstract: Due to the positive experience with tying progress in negotiations with progress in reform in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) the European Union (EU) made its membership offer to the Western Balkans (WB) countries conditional on specific democratic principles, most notably (full) cooperation with the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and respect for the Dayton Peace Accord. Yet although EU membership is regarded as highly attractive both for political elites and the general public in the region, the erratic record of compliance with ICTY-related EU conditionality raises questions about the EU's ability to provide for 'rule transfer' and 'norm diffusion' in the current enlargement round and poses a puzzle to scholars of international relations and EU enlargement alike. As I will demonstrate for the case of Croatia, both the Račan (2000-2003) and Sanader governments (since 2003) have seen many ups and downs of ICTY cooperation. The core question this study addresses is: What factors explain variation in Croatia's compliance with ICTY-related EU conditionality? The investigation period sets in with the democratic turn in 2000 and ends in December 2005, when the last remaining indictee left for The Hague.
