Quasi-Negotiated Syllabus

This study investigates the possible effects of a quasi-negotiated syllabus on learners' needs and on fostering a constructivist venue for learning with a focus on bottom up learning. It tries to answer several questions related to the role of negotiation process on classroom instruction and on constructivist learning. The analysis of the pre-test and post-test results for the questionnaire, as well as the academic achievement scores, revealed that the quasi-negotiated syllabus had a positive effect on the learners' attitudes towards learning English, the instructor, anxiety levels, autonomous learning, collaboration, and on the negotiation process. Moreover, the overall academic achievement scores of study group learners turned out to have improved when compared to the control group learners. Therefore, a quasi-negotiated syllabus can be suggested as an effective way of changing learners' perception of their language learning experience, promote a constructivist learning environment, and improve learners’ academic success. In light of the findings, suggestions are made for further studies to be carried out with different groups of learners in different settings.

Sensemaking and organizational identities in M&A

The evolution of organizational identity is often represented as a combination of an intentional management (sensegiving) and a more social negotiated sensemaking. The need to “lead” the organizational identities evolution cannot forget the social nature of this process. This work proposes to use cognitive maps in order to understand this process and generate an action plan that allows to partially lead a social process.Even if the qualitative approach of this work has the well-known limitation in generalization of findings, it is possible to underline at least two main results:• the necessity to manage deliberately the organizational identity as a variable that can affect the success of post merger integration;• the necessity to consider that the evolution of organizational identity is a social negotiation and a process of sensemaking.

Methodology for Evaluating Organization Development State

The publication focuses on the issue of evaluating the development state of organizations with the application of relative measurements through a mutual comparison indicating the degree of similarity, which can be used as an element supporting the benchmarking process. The evaluation was reduced to establishing partial ordering of data in multidimensional sets by applying static models of organizations. DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) was used in the process of evaluation, therefore part of the book is devoted to explaining the essence of the method indicating non-standard practices. The research part includes the results and the evaluation process of Technology Incubators affiliated to the Centres for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, so important for the economy development. This work will be of value to those involved in quantitative, model – based analysis in the process of decision-making and assessing the organization’s activities.

Evaluating the impact of financial development on economic growth

Evaluating the impact of financial sector on economic performance of Albania is the goal of this study. It has been formulated two hypotheses: loan affects economic performance and there is a relationship between financial development and economic growth. Selecting the right variables to measure financial development concepts and economic growth, it is one of the most sensitive part in the process of evaluating this relationship. The hypotheses are controlled through panel data regression and dynamic model and for the evaluation method of these models is used the least squares method (LS) and the general method of moments (GMM). The empirical findings reinforce the importance of the lending process in the economic performance and the existence of the relationship between financial development and economic growth. The conclusions are consistent with the theory.

Advanced Control for a Chemical Process

Process measurements are taken in chemical plants for the purpose of evaluating process control or process performance. However, not all variables needed are generally measured due to technical infeasibility or cost. Furthermore, the measurements are often contaminated in the sense that random noise may be present due to result of miscalibration or failure of the measuring instruments. In this book, the benefits of combining dynamic data reconciliation (DDR) with Generic Model Control (GMC) are demonstrated on two example chemical processes. DDR is used preliminary to reconcile and estimate measured and unmeasured data required for evaluating process control or process performance. In the case studies, the robustness of the proposed control strategy is investigated with respect to changes in process condition, modeling error and disturbance variable for both set point regulation and set point tracking. The results show that a rudimentary treatment of measurement errors and an estimation of unknown quantities have proved extremely effective. Therefore, DDR approach is an important adjunct to advanced control.

Negotiated Settlements in the Pipeline Services Market

The movement from traditional regulatory hearings to negotiated settlements represents both a departure from cost of service regulation and a relaxation of regulatory oversight in the regulation of oil and gas pipeline tolls. Under negotiated settlements pipelines and shippers are able to renegotiate inclusions in their cost of service while simultaneously creating a profit margin for the pipeline where none existed under the cost of service outcome of a traditional hearing. Predicated on the observed preference of pipelines and shippers for negotiated settlements; most of the existing literature assumes that these settlements represent increased efficiency over hearings. Various claims have been made as to why negotiated settlements are more efficient than hearings but little attention is paid to other elements that affect the preferences of those affected. This volume presents an overview of the current hypothesized efficiencies from settlement outcomes and constructs a new model to illustrate the existence of positive non-efficiency gains to pipeline and shipper from the re-allocation of expenses through time.

Development of driving schedules for evaluating GHG emissions

The driving schedule is a very important concept in the development and applications of EPA’s latest mobile source emission model MOVES (MOtor Vehicle Emission Simulator). The study in this work is to develop a city-specific driving schedule for evaluating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (specifically carbon dioxide (CO2)) from light-duty vehicles. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to find the optimum driving schedules composed of a combination of microtrips selected from a pool of microtrips. A two-step evaluation process is conducted on the developed driving schedules. Evaluation results show that the driving schedules developed by the driving operating mode distribution measure result in more accurate CO2 emission estimations.

The past half a century has seen a shift in attitudes towards the use of this drug in a way that has moved the user from the margins to the center of the society. The present study aims at not only evaluating the degree to which marijuana has become a normal part of growing up, but also evaluating the mechanisms of self-formation that have aided this process. Using qualitative data gathered from the students at the University of Guelph, it is argued that not only sensible use of marijuana has become ‘normalized’, but also this normalization is the result of the fluid way in which youths form their identity in the post-modern world.

Aesthetic shapes evaluation through haptic technology

The design of aesthetic products is a process that requires a set of activities where digital models and physical mockups play an important role in the design process. Typically, virtual objects are modified (and built) several times before reaching the desired design, increasing the development time and, consequently, the final product cost. Moreover, each time a physical mockup is required for evaluating the product, the design process halts, waiting for the construction of the physical prototype. However, while the other phases of the design process only take a few minutes or hours, the physical mockup production requires more time that can range from days to weeks, causing a bigger impact in the design process. The haptic-based immersive system that we propose here will reduce the number of physical mockups during the design process allowing designers to perform all the phases of the product design process (concept, modelling, visual and physical evaluation and modification) continuously and without any interruption.

Patterns for Monitoring and Evaluating

Abstract. Understanding and analyzing collaborative learning processes requires a fine-grained sequential analysis of the group interaction in the context of learning goals. Several researchers in the area of collaborative work take the quality of the group outcome as a success criterion. Nevertheless, recent findings are giving more importance to the quality of the collaboration process itself. This paper presents a set of patterns the main objective of which is to evaluate and monitor the collaborative learning process. Also we describe some software tools we have implemented based on these set of patterns and how the patterns proposed have helped us to evaluate and monitor the collaborative learning processes. In this paper our aim is to present a method, which can be used in analyzing the interaction processes in a CSCL environment.

Fuzzy logic controller for cooling process in refinery

Process control is the regulation of designated process parameters to within a specified target range or to a set target value called the set point. Process control is most often used in refineries, because many materials, such as fuel, gasoline and kerosene, must be accurate for a product to be well made. Therefore, to implement a quality product, process control is used to monitor and correct process parameters by analyzing the state of dynamic variables. Dynamic variables are process characteristics, such as temperature, flow, and pressure that vary with time. Through its I/O interfaces, a controller can regulate these dynamic variables to a desired set point, thus implementing process control.

Evaluating Recreation Services, 4th Ed.: Making Enlightened Decisions

Evaluation is a process that each of us uses every day. Professionals in any field of human services must have the means to access and assess information. Having information is not enough, however, unless that information can be applied and used. To organize and manage recreation services (i.e., all elements related to the various specialties in the field such as parks, tourism, sports, arts, therapeutic recreation, camping, event management), information is needed about peoples preferences, needs, and behaviors and the programs, administrative structures, and resources that comprise the organizations. To build a body of knowledge and to document the value of recreation, systematic processes are necessary. Evaluation and research can provide information that will enable "enlightened decisions." Evaluating Recreation Services: Making Enlightened Decisions, Fourth Edition, is about systematic evaluation and research that focuses specifically on identifying explicit evaluation criteria or research questions, collecting evidence or data, and making judgments about the value or the worth of something applied to service improvement or knowledge development. This book aims to provide a basic overview and working knowledge of procedures. Knowing basic steps in evaluation research and having some familiarity with evaluation and research tools can help you to begin a process of lifelong learning about systematic inquiry.

An Evaluation Framework for Workflow Modeling Techniques

Nowadays, the automation of business processes is helping organizations achieve their goals easily and efficiently. Workflow Management System (WfMS) is one of the most important IT applications used for managing and automating business processes. WfMSs help organizations to automate a range of business tasks, and electronically route the right information to the right people at the right time. One of the most important parts of any WfMS is the process modeling or process definition techniques which are used to analyze, model and describe business processes. There are many Workflow Modeling Techniques (WfMTs) such as Petri Nets (PNs), Event-driven Process Chains (EPCs), Unified Modeling Language Activity Diagrams (UML ADs), and Business Process Modeling Notations (BPMNs), etc. The aim of this book is to develop a framework for evaluating and selecting the suitable WfMT depending on the situation at hand. The evaluation framework for WfMTs is based on set of criteria which comes either from literature or case study requirements. The suggested WfMTs Selection Template provide a good methodology for ranking and selecting the most suitable WfMT for business process or case at hand.

Civil War Outcomes

This study sets out to seek answers to two interrelated questions: (1) what factors predict the likelihood that a civil war will end in a negotiated settlement? (2) Is regime type a relevant and strong variable in civil war peace process? Existing data on civil wars and other related variables are used in building a composite dataset for the study. Different operations of statistical analysis, including cross-tabulation and logistic regressions, are conducted. The study finds that regime type, though statistically related to civil war outcome, does not make a statistically significant contribution to its best predictive model. The study further finds that the duration of the dispute, whether the war occurred during the Cold War or post Cold War, and whether rebel agenda is separatist or non-separatist, predict whether the war will end in negotiated settlement or in decisive victory. The study challenges common notions and theories of regime studies and dispute resolution as part of the implications of its findings.

Composting acts as a route method for organising cataclysmic mortality losses. A study was undertaken to assess the composting process with an animal mortality. Freeze dried minced meat was treated with the substrates and the effect of inoculation with three fungus was analysed. Eighteen treatments with semi-plot scale were aerobically built and were monitored and turned periodically. Moisture content was maintained at 22%. Composting plant development and operation hugely relies on its processing and material handling. Physical and chemical parameters are very crucial markers in evaluating the process quality of the product. Evaluation of microbial and fungal population was examined during the course of the process. The project was aimed to develop an insight into the best practicable environmental option for managing dead animal mortalities

Multi-Criteria Decision Making Model for Project Financing

The objective of this paper is to develop a multi-criteria decision making model for project financing. In the process, state-of-the-art literatures are reviewed on project management, project financing, multi-criteria decision making techniques and models, Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), etc. Furthermore, problems related to project selection and financing in the Ethiopian Banks are analyzed in depth by using evaporating cloud diagram as a method. In general, evaluating a project and disbursing finance is one of the most difficult and risky task for employees and also for bankers. The study identified and categorized the main project success factors into seven. They are: technical, market and demand, financial, socio-economic, institutional, discounting, and non-discounting criteria. Under each criterion, sub-criteria are included. By using these criteria as an input, an AHP structure of hierarchy is developed. The research further revealed that the proposed method can reduce decision making process in addition to decision quality. In the case study, the application of the proposed method reduced the decision making process from 6 months to a month.

Although demonstration and commercial plants have been brought into operation recently, the process concept has not been proved on an industrial scale yet. The aim of my PhD work presented in this book was to investigate the lignocellulose-to-ethanol process either by performing experiments regarding certain process steps or by constructing and evaluating techno-economic models of the whole process.

Therefore, what is required is a theoretical framework that could explain and relates the concept of planning to the concept of power, and seeks an explanation of decision-making process. The organizational changes and complex interaction in local government that involve politicians, planners, officers and decision-making bring about the important of current practices and evaluating future changes. Thus, this book tries to propose a model of decision making-process for greater performance in local government. In the findings, there are a few factors influencing councilors in running their functions. It shows that councilor as representatives at local government level will be a good policy maker in handling local manners by adopting this proposed model.

Towards Democratic Consolidation in Malawi

Eighteen years into a multi party democracy, the electoral process remains one of the most contentious issues in Malawi. The Malawi Electoral Commission, just like many electoral management bodies in emerging democracies, has routinely struggled to manage a credible electoral process. With a myriad of problems ranging from inadequate resources, inadequate trained personnel, to the never ending political engineering of the electoral process; a wish for a credible electoral process seems like a far cry. It is also clear that the legal framework on which the electoral management mechanism is based has serious flaws which allow for easy manipulation of the process. The need for an overhaul of the entire electoral is more imminent than it has ever been before.

A GA approach to the Optimization of Laser Beam Welding process

Automation of a manufacturing process has become the order of the day in industries in order to achieve high production rates and high quality of finished components. However, in order to automate a process it is essential to find the best values of process variables. In turn, this requires the establishment of precise quantitative relationships between the process control variables and the chosen output responses. The scope of the proposed work is intended to develop such relationships for the chosen responses in terms of input variables and utilizes those developed relations to find the optimal set of process variables in Laser welding and Laser machining. Once the optimal values are found, then the process could be automated based on them there by reducing the manpower thus reduces the welding cost.

Human Resource Development (HRD) in the Public Sector

None of the models of Human Resource Development (HRD) are comprehensive enough to embrace the training process, training evaluation, and feedback into the training process in the public sector of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG). There is no consistent fundamental body of knowledge for trainers to follow in proposing, designing, implementing, and evaluating training programs. This book develops a practical model of HRD which includes the training process after needs assessment to the determination of various outcomes of HRD programs. The application of this model could help to solve the questions that are raised when deciding between an internal or external course of training. It also helps with candidacy procedure, not by recommending policies for candidacy, but by recommending solutions to various deficiencies that a candidate might have prior to becoming a qualified trainee. When a strategic HRD plan is to be implemented to train large numbers of public employees and public managers, the model proposes a way to fill the various gaps in the training capabilities of local trainers in order to make them qualified trainers capable of offering specific training programs.

Process Performance Evaluation Using Histogram and Taguchi Techniques

Today, an organization’s ability to compete in changing global economy depends largely on the quality of products and services. Trends such as supply base reduction and consolidation, product and process design, production or manufacturing planning are increasing. For many companies, purchase accounts for 50% to 60% of sales amount and are the source of half of the quality problems. Process capability analysis is a vital part of an overall quality improvement program. It is a technique that has application in many segments of the product cycle, including product and process design, vendor sourcing, production or manufacturing planning, and manufacturing, Douglas C. Montgomery (2001). Frequently, a process capability study involves observing a quality characteristic of the product. Since this information usually pertains to the product rather than the process, this analysis should strictly speaking be called a product analysis study. A true process capability study in this context would involve collecting data that relates to process parameters so that remedial actions can be identified on a timely basis.

Key criteria in Project Evaluation

This book considers project evaluation in a particular context, namely New Service Development (NSD) projects. The book aims at understanding the purposes, the process of evaluating NSD projects and pointing out specific criteria during the evaluation of NSD projects. Our study reveals a list of eight important criteria of evaluation. This consists of 3 financial criteria:(1)profitability, (2)production cost,(3)return on investment; and five non-financial criteria:(4)strategic fit,(5)marketing criteria,(6)corporate social responsibilities,(7)information quality,and(8)facilitating factors. Among them,‘strategic fit'(4) &‘customer satisfaction’ (a part of ‘marketing criteria’)(5)are recommended as ‘must’ for the evaluation process on any type of NSD project. Qualitative approach is applied to collect data through 3 case studies (to build comprehensive understanding of the process), & 17 semi-structured interviews in Albania,Italy,Sweden and Vietnam (to identify evaluation criteria employed in practice). Findings of this research contribute to the existing body of knowledge in project management & NSD by suggesting a set of key criteria that should be used as a practical guidance.

Journey to Understanding: How Style and Content Impact the Spoken Word

This is a philosophical investigation of the issues of understanding, using the church, a preacher and his congregation as well as extended audience (the listeners of his Sunday morning radio show on Raypower 100.5 FM) as the focus. This monograph surveys how information is disseminated, received, interpreted, understood and acted upon within the above described sender-receiver spectrum. This treatise considers both sides of the understanding divide as a subset of the communication process. Here, ‘Understanding’ is treated as a concept that bears significant relevance to the process of communication, but not as the process itself. The sender-receiver spectrum is problematised in this study, evaluating the antics, theatrics, flamboyance and verbose style of Reverend Chris Okotie, Senior Pastor, Household of God Church (located in Oregun-Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria) versus the depth of understanding of his messages that members of his congregation possess. The style and content distractions that may corrupt the understanding of a preacher's messages are discussed in ways that offer solutions to the problem.

Software-Assisted Tailoring of Process Descriptions

Revision with unchanged content. Agile software development does not lessen the necessity of consciously thinking about processes. On the contrary, agile paradigms need to be embedded in a broader perspective on appropriate processes: The degree of flexibility a process allows for should always be adjusted to the needs of the current project. Process tailoring is an effective means for carrying out these adjustments. However, process tailoring is a difficult task that requires both experience and good knowledge about the current project. In order to facilitate process tailoring, and to promote it being put to use more commonly, this book puts forward a formal tailoring framework as the basis for a software-based tailoring support system.

Evaluating Fiscal Decentralization in Peru

This book evaluates Peru’s decentralization reform in 2002 and focuses on the fiscal decentralization and tax collection of subnational governments. By identifying the obstacles of the Peruvian process this becomes a contribution to the research of how minimize demerits, and optimize merits of decentralization. The writers argue that Peru’s heterogeneous nature and large inequalities makes it difficult to successfully transform the country according to the original reform. Also, the Peruvian government face the dilemma of how to simultaneously increase subnational independence while keep the national unity intact.

Identification and simulation of manufacturing uncertainties

The research presents methodologies to identify and simulate manufacturing defects in three-dimension, and simple indicators for evaluating the global quality of a fixture. We then developed a model for simulating positioning defects of a workpiece that is fixed on a three-jaw chuck. This model is a combination of three methods: design of experiments, finite element simulation, and Monte Carlo simulation. Three factors, which are assumed to be the most important in positioning defects, are used in this model. Based on the simulated results, the influences of these factors are estimated. The results obtained from simulations can be expressed by form of distributions or statistical parameters. These allow using simulation of tolerance analysis based on Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, a model is developed based on MMP for tolerance analysis. This model allows us to verify a given process plan with functional tolerances of the machined part by determination of a number of machined parts out of tolerance zones or determine functional tolerances of a batch of machined parts based on a given process plan (without functional tolerances) and a number of rejected parts per million.
