Подробнее...

Religion Around Emily Dickinson, although her name appears in the title, is not simply a book "about" Emily Dickinson. Instead, Religion Around Emily Dickinson tries to answer a two-sided question: do we gain a fresh perspective on nineteenth-century religion if we view it through the lens of Emily Dickinson's poetry, and do we gain a fresh perspective on Dickinson as a writer if we view her through the pivotal issues confronting religion in nineteenth-century America?

Emily Dickinson The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson (Series First Through Third)

827 руб.
Emily Dickinson (1830-1886), the reclusive and intensely private poet saw only a few of her poems (she wrote well over a thousand) published during her life. After discovering a trove of manuscripts left in a wooden box, Dickinson's sister Lavinia fortunately chose to disobey Emily's wishes for her work to be burned after death. With the help of Amherst professors, Lavinia brought her sister's gifted verse into print. It is here, in "The Collected Poems of Emily Dickinson", that we witness her singular poetic depth and range of style. Collected are the first three series of her posthumous publishing career coming out respectively in 1890, 1891, and 1896. The myth that surrounds Dickinson's life is enhanced by the ethereal quality of her poetry. With the coming of New Criticism in the 1930's and 40's, Dickinson experienced unprecedented posthumous acclaim, solidifying her place in American letters. Dickinson's idiom is as varied as her meter, and her unconventional use of punctuation, metaphor, and image make her an innovator of the lyric akin to many of the early modernists. These poems examine love, death, and nature with an effortless yet complex tone and voice. Now one of the most read and admired American poets, Dickinson's poetry continues to resonate with readers.

Emily Dickinson's Rich Conversation: Poetry, Philosophy, Science is a comprehensive account of Emily Dickinson's aesthetic and intellectual life. Through her letters and poems, Richard E. Brantley identifies Dickinson's dialogue with John Locke's rational empiricism, Charles Darwin's evolutionary biology, Wordsworth's 'natural methodism,' Ralph Waldo Emerson's idealism, and European and American intellectual traditions. Contrary to the image of the isolated poet, this ambitious study reveals Dickinson's agile mind developing through conversation with a community of contemporaries.

Stephen Cushman Fictions of Form in American Poetry

Подробнее...

3439 руб.
In the 1830s Alexis de Tocqueville prophesied that American writers would slight, even despise, form--that they would favor the sensational over rational order. He suggested that this attitude was linked to a distinct concept of democracy in America. Exposing the inaccuracies of such claims when applied to poetry, Stephen Cushman maintains that American poets tend to overvalue the formal aspects of their art and in turn overestimate the relationship between those formal aspects and various ideas of America. In this book Cushman examines poems and prose statements in which poets as diverse as Emily Dickinson and Ezra Pound describe their own poetic forms, and he investigates links and analogies between poets' notions of form and their notions of "Americanness.".The book begins with a brief discussion of Whitman, who said, "The United States themselves are essentially the greatest poem." Cushman takes this to mean that American poetry has succeeded in making fictions about itself which persuade its readers that its uniqueness transcends merely geographical boundaries. He explores the truth of this statement by considering the Americanness of Emily Dickinson, Ezra Pound, Elizabeth Bishop, and A. R. Ammons. He concludes that the uniqueness of American poetry lies not so much in its forms as in its formalism and in the various attitudes that formalism reveals.Originally published in 1993.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to...

Elizabeth Phillips Emily Dickinson. Personae and Performance

Подробнее...

6664 руб.
"In this beautifully written, refreshingly insightful explication of Dickinson's work, Phillips argues that the Amherst poet . . . 'assumed many personae,' and that 'the experiences in the poems are often transformations of episodes in the lives of personal friends, literary characters, and historical figures for whom a fictive "I" is only a convenient term.'"-Nineteenth-Century Literature"Although the intention of this book is not strictly biographical, the life of Dickinson is vividly portrayed and realistically interpreted. Instead of the stereotypical image of Emily Dickinson as the New England Nun, we see instead a real woman living quietly and working hard at home, full of concern for those she loves, deeply affected by the issues of her day, interacting intensely with the world around her through poetry and letters. Phillips challenges many of those interpretations of Dickinson's life and poetry that have become almost standard and universally accepted . . . . This is an important book for the Dickinson scholar who will recognize immediately the debates and controversies among Dickinson scholars that Phillips gracefully refers to and very adequately challenges."-ChoiceElizabeth Phillips is Professor Emerita of English at Wake Forest University. She is the author of Marianne Moore.

Virginia Jackson Dickinson's Misery. A Theory of Lyric Reading

Подробнее...

4239 руб.
How do we know that Emily Dickinson wrote poems? How do we recognize a poem when we see one? In Dickinson's Misery, Virginia Jackson poses fundamental questions about reading habits we have come to take for granted. Because Dickinson's writing remained largely unpublished when she died in 1886, decisions about what it was that Dickinson wrote have been left to the editors, publishers, and critics who have brought Dickinson's work into public view. The familiar letters, notes on advertising fliers, verses on split-open envelopes, and collections of verses on personal stationery tied together with string have become the Dickinson poems celebrated since her death as exemplary lyrics. Jackson makes the larger argument that the century and a half spanning the circulation of Dickinson's work tells the story of a shift in the publication, consumption, and interpretation of lyric poetry. This shift took the form of what this book calls the "lyricization of poetry," a set of print and pedagogical practices that collapsed the variety of poetic genres into lyric as a synonym for poetry. Featuring many new illustrations from Dickinson's manuscripts, this book makes a major contribution to the study of Dickinson and of nineteenth-century American poetry. It maps out the future for new work in historical poetics and lyric theory.

Seminar paper from the year 2001 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1 (A), University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institute for England and American Studies), course: Emily Dickenson, 22 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: We know much of Dickinson´s life through her correspondences. She maintained a lifelong correspondence with Susan Dickinson, even though they were next-door neighbors. This correspondence, preserved by Susan, is the source for many of the poet´s manuscripts. But Emily Dickinson also corresponded with school friends, with her cousins Fanny and Loo Norcross, and with several people of letters, including Samuel Bowles, Dr. and Mrs. J.G. Holland, T.W. Higginson, and Helen Hunt Jackson. The central events, then, of Dickinson´s life are those that are central to the life of most writers: she wrote. She compiled a manuscript recorded of 1.775 poems, along with many letters. In or around 1858 she began to keep manuscript books of her poetry, the "fascicles", hand-produced and hand-bound. In the early 1860s she produced hundreds of poems each year. In 1864 and 1865, failing eyesight, which impelled her to make two extended visits to Cambridge, Massachusette for medical treatment, slowed her production of manuscipt books. But her production of manuscripts continued at a slower pace until her last illness in 1885-86. Though she wrote hundreds of poems, Dickinson never published a book of poetry. The few poems published during h...

Paul Brody The Lonely House. A Short Biography of Emily Dickinson

During her lifetime, Emily Dickinson did not seek out recognition or attempt to change the world around her, even in the smallest way. A private but not antisocial person, she kept her life’s work, and her innermost feelings, almost entirely to herself. Her life was rich in intellectual pursuits, and she had many friends with whom she exchanged witty and brilliant letters, but she rarely left the town of her birth. From the early 1860s onward, she became essentially a recluse. After her death in 1886, it was only the good judgment of her sister Lavinia that preserved the more than 1,700 poems Dickinson had secretly produced. Her poetry was so intensely individual that it immediately captivated a national audience. More than a century later, her special genius continues to surprise readers young and old. Read more about her fascinating book in this biography.LifeCaps is an imprint of BookCaps Study Guides. This is a volume of poetry published jointly by the three Bronte sisters, Charlotte, Emily and Anne in 1846 and it is their first work to ever go in print. To evade contemporary prejudice against female writers, the Bronte sisters adopted masculine first names. The book was published under the title Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. All three retained the first letter of their first names: Charlotte became Currer Bell, Anne became Acton Bell, and Emily took the name Ellis.

Alan William Powers Parodies Lost

Why are poets expected to be sad-faced? This question begins my story-poem: "He knew--from a picture of Rod McKuen-- of all his race, the poet makes the saddest face. And next to a hound, the saddest sound." Maybe when the dog is not a hound, he'll write happier. Our dog-poet is an English Sheepdog named Wordsworth, pet of the central character Onagain, who is a brilliant parodist like my great college friend who left us young. The story features many bit parts--homeless Eddy, writing novels from his car, realtor-poets naming streets, a fly-fishing old pervert, a secretarial professor, and a schoolboy who falls in love with his teacher Miss Paris. The boy writes some verse, and his poet's mind grows. Getting back to the saddest face, why do modern poets write about themselves? Surely poets live among the dullest lives. Centuries ago poets wrote little about themselves: Chaucer, Shakespeare, Moliere, Plautus, Ovid, Martial. My favorites. Even the Beatles wrote about others in Sergeant Pepper's. So I began parodying the Me-Me-Me (sing it) of poets like Ashbery, Angelou, Wilbur, Dylan Thomas, even the greatest, Dickinson , along with rappers and Country Western singers: "I'm only a laborer In the Factory of Love." Commonly we see a parade of poets more interested in themselves than Chaucer was, or than any novel reader can be. Parodies Lost makes fun of this. We expect modern poets to confine themselves to their own psyches, even avoid the wit and...
