Henry Thompson L. The Stress Effect. Why Smart Leaders Make Dumb Decisions--And What to Do About It

Reveals the powerful and undermining effects of stress on good decision making-and what leaders can do about it The ability to make sound and timely decisions is the mark of a good leader. But when leaders with otherwise strong track records suddenly begin making poor decisions-as seen in the recent corporate scandals that rocked the business world-the impact can be widespread. In The Stress Effect, leadership expert Henry L. Thompson argues that stress is often the real culprit behind this leadership failure: when leaders' stress levels become sufficiently elevated-whether in the boardroom or on the front line of a manufacturing process-their ability to effectively use their emotional intelligence and cognitive ability in tandem to make wise decisions is significantly impaired. Until now, experts have argued that increasing your emotional intelligence will help you cope with and manage stress. This book suggests that stress actually blocks access to your emotional intelligence as well as your cognitive ability, two critical components in the decision-making process. This book Shows how stress adversely affects the performance of even the most savvy leaders Reveals the truth about one of the prime factors behind the current failure of leadership Offers a solid prescription for building a «stress resilient system» and arms leaders with best practices for managing specific stressors that take the biggest toll on decision making Is written by an award-winning organizational psychologist and leadership consultant whose clients include a roster of Fortune 500 companies A groundbreaking and insightful resource for leaders, The Stress Effect reopens the dialogue on stress, its effect on decision making, and what to do about it.

What could be more important to college and university faculty than teaching well? Indeed, in the past several years researchers have not only investigated key variables influencing teaching and learning, they also have applied empirical findings to develop and refine new systems of teaching and learning—approaches that provide the infrastructure for the day-to-day organization and assessment of student learning over the course of an academic term. This volume presents an overview of these systems and offers an assessment of the effectiveness of each relative to both student learning and enjoyment of the learning process. Written by leading teaching scholars, these systems include the lecture, problem-based learning, case studies, team-based learning, interteaching, service-learning, just-in-time teaching, Web-based computer-aided personalized instruction, and online teaching. Each contributor outlines the basic principles of a system, describes how to implement the system, and reviews the system’s overall effectiveness. This is the 128th volume of the Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly report New Directions for Teaching and Learning, which offers a comprehensive range of ideas and techniques for improving college teaching based on the experience of seasoned instructors and the latest findings of educational and psychological researchers.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Psychology - Cognition, grade: 1,3, University of Hamburg (Kognitionspsychologie), language: English, abstract: Individuals differ in their tendency to shift towards habitual behavior after stress. Mindfulness is an individual characteristic that does not only influence the stress response, but also cognitive processes. Therefore, effects of trait-mindfulness on the balance between goal-directed and habitual behavior after a stress induction were investigated. During this study, forty-seven healthy male and female participants mainly without meditation experience, were exposed to either a laboratory acute stress induction or a control procedure before they performed in a two-staged instrumental learning paradigm and completed a mindfulness questionnaire. Participants learned the acquired discriminations and a congruence effect, as predicted, was found. Moreover, explicit knowledge was highly indicative of level of goal-directedness. The stress manipulation was successful. Stressed individuals did not shift more towards habits. Mindfulness did not predict the level of goal-directedness, neither did it affect stress responses. Future studies might incorporate a mindfulness intervention or compare differently experienced meditators. This could help to approve mindfulness as a potential intervention to reduce cognitive shifts towards habits, which play a major role in development of pathological behavior.

Despite their widespread use it is still unknown why employee stock option plans are adopted, how their effectiveness is defined, and what influences their effectiveness. This master’s thesis reports on an exploratory study undertaken on a sample of employees of the German IT company Network Appliance GmbH intended to answer exactly these questions. The aim of this study was to explore in an in-depth, descriptive fashion, the perspectives of employees receiving stock options as part of their compensation as they are as participants in the process - best situated to provide insights into the practical implications on the use and effectiveness of employee stock options. The qualitative methodology of the study allowed for the opinions and experiences of the employees to be heard and a rich picture of their perceptions on employee stock options was attained. The qualitative content analysis revealed a number of goals, which are associated with employees’ perceptions on why employee stock options are a part of their compensation, and which factors influence these goals’ effectiveness. An exploratory model of the use and effectiveness of employee stock options has been deducted from these findings, which enables managers and researchers to obtain a better understanding of this means of compensation. The aim of this study was to establish the effect of the invitational attitude of teachers on the culture of teaching and learning. This entailed a detailed literature study on the invitational attitude of teachers and its effect on the culture of teaching and learning at schools. South African education is presently facing major challenges. It is widely recognised that it is essential to transform the apartheid-based system of the past into an egalitarian one. There were imbalances and inequalities amongst separate education departments. The blacks were the most disadvantaged. For the purpose of the empirical investigation a prepared questionnaire was administered to 300 grade 12 learners of six secondary schools. The data obtained from the completed questionnaire were processed and analysed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. From the empirical investigation it was concluded that the quality of an education system is more dependent on the attitude of the teachers than any other single factor. The absence of a culture of teaching and learning in schools can be reversed by the inviting attitude of the teachers.

We' ve shown for the first time that gene expression pattern is altered in the myocardium of cholesterol-fed mouse in response to ischemic preconditioning. This effect is apparent in the regulation of NO signaling, oxidant producing enzymes, and the mevalonate pathway. Our was the first demonstration in human apoB-100 transgenic mice, that hypercholesterolemia but not hypertriglyceridemia is responsible for the hyperlipidemia-induced, peroxynitrite-mediated cardiac dysfunction, and that increased cardiac NADPH oxidase activity is a major source of increased oxidative stress in hypercholesterolemia. We observed first, that acute lovastatin treatment abolished the infarct size-limiting effect of ischemic preconditioning and that chronic lovastatin treatment attenuated the protective effect of ischemic postconditioning. We've also proposed that acute and chronic lovastatin treatment might modulated the cardioprotective mechanisms through different cellular pathways.

A guidebook for the journey from exhaustion to enlightenment Chronic multitasking and ever-increasing demands on our time and energy have caused a neurochemically-based dependence on sources of stress and stimulation to provide fuel for our chaotic lifestyles. While this may boost performance in the short-term, studies have consistently shown that when stress hormones are elevated over time they create the worst form of internal wear and tear; decreasing productivity, wasting time, and even killing brain cells. As a result, modern society is tired and wired, suffering from physical exhaustion while mentally amped up, and unable to get adequate rest. Stress in and of itself is not bad, and is actually utilized for growth when balanced with adequate recovery. The solution to stress addiction is to build in and prioritize optimal rest and relaxation on a holistic level—body, mind, and spirit—in order to consistently recharge and create a more resilient operating system. Stressaholic shows you how to win the war on stress without limiting progress by creating an optimal performance pulse of stress and recovery for life. Explains the impact of chronic stress on the human operating system; body, mind, and spirit Shows how a simple shift in mindset can dramatically alter physiological responses to stress Reveals simple techniques for altering daily stress patterns to improve natural rhythms, creating a personalized performance pulse With easy to implement tips and real-world examples of people and organizations that have turned stress into sustainable drive, Stressaholic will guide you on your journey from exhaustion to enlightenment!

Teaching without Testing: Assessing the Complexity of Children’s Literacy Learning by Denny Taylor is the second book in Garn Press Women Scholars Series. This book revisits Taylor’s seminal and influential work based on her Biographic Literacy Profiles Project. Teaching without Testing: Assessing the Complexity of Children’s Literacy Learning is a timely book that challenges the scientific assumptions of standardized testing in developing effective instruction to meet the literate lives of all students. Through detailed observations of student learning, Taylor encourages readers to consider alternative ways of assessing children’s reading and writing based on observable literacy behaviors. Supporting a humanistic perspective to the education of children, Taylor argues that standardized and diagnostic methods of assessment and teaching, based on test-driven, cooperate-led accountability practices, have detrimental effects on children and result in the de-professionalization of teachers.

Molecular markers especially, microsatellite or simple sequence repeats (SSRs) was the marker aided selection (MAS) technique utilized to determine salinity tolerance in rice. It accelerates rice breeding process by significantly improving selection efficiency. Fourty varieties were used to study the effect of salt stress on seedling growth and efficiency of SSR markers for the screening of salt tolerant varieties. Phenotyping of the varieties at the seedling stage was done using salinized (EC=12ds/m) culture solution under controlled conditions at the Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) glasshouse. Salt tolerant varieties showed stunted growth with the reduction of leaf area over the varieties of non-saline conditions. The seedlings grown from the normal seeds were vigorous than the seedlings from the seeds of saline conditions. This result indicated the impediment of seed vigor due to salt stress.

Songs have been present in peoples lives from the very beginning of humanity. They have been with us during religious ceremonies, in bars and in the shower. Songs have become an integral part of our language experience, and if used in coordination with a language lesson they can be of great value. The research, presented in this book considers a comparative study and analysis in the usage of song lyrics and the traditional more formal course book exercises in the teaching of Present Simple, Present Continuous and Past Simple tenses to year 7, 8 and 9 students. The aim of this book is to introduce the different methods of teaching English verb tenses, the use of song lyrics and music in the EFL classroom. It also focused on the reasons for using songs by demonstrating their effectiveness as a learning tool. The fact that grammar teaching may sometimes appear to be boring for certain students may make them rather unwilling to learn the grammar of a foreign language. In this situation, teachers should find some alternative, more motivating ways of teaching it.

26505.31 руб.
Plants are subjected to a variety of abiotic stresses such as drought, temperature, salinity, air pollution, heavy metals, UV radiations, etc. To survive under these harsh conditions plants are equipped with different resistance mechanisms which vary from species to species. Due to the environmental fluctuations agricultural and horticultural crops are often exposed to different environmental stresses leading to decreased yield and problems in the growth and development of the crops. Drought stress has been found to decrease the yield to an alarming rate of some important crops throughout the globe. During last few decades, lots of physiological and molecular works have been conducted under water stress in crop plants. Water Stress and Crop Plants: A Sustainable Approach presents an up-to-date in-depth coverage of drought and flooding stress in plants, including the types, causes and consequences on plant growth and development. It discusses the physiobiochemical, molecular and omic approaches, and responses of crop plants towards water stress. Topics include nutritional stress, oxidative stress, hormonal regulation, transgenic approaches, mitigation of water stress, approaches to sustainability, and modern tools and techniques to alleviate the water stress on crop yields. This practical book offers pragmatic guidance for scientists and researchers in plant biology, and agribusinesses and biotechnology companies dealing with agronomy and environment, to mitigate the negative effects of stress and improve yield under stress. The broad coverage also makes this a valuable guide enabling students to understand the physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of environmental stress in plants.

Patil Pratap Inverse creep in textile yarns

Подробнее...

9864 руб.
Inverse creep is a phenomenon, which is found to occur in viscoelastic materials when the applied stress is partially reduced. At this reduced stress, the strain in the material reduces continuously with time, though it is still under stress. Inverse creep values depend on the material and also on its stress history. During weaving of a fabric, weft threads are inserted in between the warp threads, which are along the direction of the fabric production. A weft thread undergoes variation in stress during weaving. It is at high stress when it is being laid down in the fabric. But the stress may not reduce to zero once the thread is laid down; thus giving rise to the phenomenon of inverse creep. Creep of textile materials has been measured by number of researchers. Inverse creep can be measured by the method demonstrated by Nachane. The objective of the work described in book was to design an instrument, which can measure the instantaneous extension or contraction of yarn. Automation in storing the data is achieved. Stored data can then be easily analyzed. Creep and inverse creep of four textile yarn types at various levels of stress have been studied by using developed device.
