Creating and contemplating the Renaissance Garden

The Italian Renaissance garden can be considered among the most famous of garden paradigms. This book examines the total sense perceptions constructed inside the early Renaissance garden as a reflection of Renaissance thought and theological meaning. It explores the cognitive connections between that which is experienced inside the garden and expressed about the garden, for the ultimate purpose of discovery man's dignity and God-likeness. What will first be examined and described in detail are the gardens of fifteenth century Italy, primarily those in the Medici villas that executed the initial application of geometric forms. By also examining ancient and Renaissance literature and scientific treatises this book will examine the evolution of Renaissance garden design into a formal garden design and theory in the sixteenth century based on evolving perceptions about the meaning of the natural world and the dignity of mankind. The book further examines each sense perception experienced inside the garden to demonstrate how audio, visual and overall multiple sense experience contributed to deeper intellectual and theological meaning.

Peter Burke The Italian Renaissance. Culture and Society in Italy

In this brilliant and widely acclaimed work, Peter Burke presents a social and cultural history of the Italian Renaissance. He discusses the social and political institutions which existed in Italy during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and analyses the ways of thinking and seeing which characterized this period of extraordinary artistic creativity. Developing a distinctive sociological approach, Peter Burke is concerned with not only the finished works of Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci and others, but also with the social background, patterns of recruitment and means of subsistence of this ‘cultural elite’. New to this edition is a fully revised introduction focusing on what Burke terms ‘the domestic turn’ in Renaissance studies and discussing the relation of the Renaissance to global trends. He thus makes a major contribution to our understanding of the Italian Renaissance, and to our comprehension of the complex relations between culture and society. This thoroughly revised and updated third edition is richly illustrated throughout. It will have a wide appeal among historians, sociologists and anyone interested in one of the most creative periods of European history.

Uncovering the hidden realities beneath the surface of the period’s best-known artworks, historian Alexander Lee takes the reader on a breathtaking and unexpected journey through the Italian past and shows that, far from being the product of high-minded ideals, the sublime monuments of the Renaissance were created by flawed and tormented artists who lived in an ever-expanding world of bigotry and hatred. The only question is: will you ever see the Renaissance in quite the same way again?

Shakespeare and Renaissance Ethics

Written by a distinguished international team of contributors, this volume explores Shakespeare's vivid depictions of moral deliberation and individual choice in light of Renaissance debates about ethics. Examining the intellectual context of Shakespeare's plays, the essays illuminate Shakespeare's engagement with the most pressing moral questions of his time, considering the competing claims of politics, Christian ethics and classical moral philosophy, as well as new perspectives on controversial topics such as conscience, prayer, revenge and suicide. Looking at Shakespeare's responses to emerging schools of thought such as Calvinism and Epicureanism, and assessing comparisons between Shakespeare and his French contemporary Montaigne, the collection addresses questions such as: when does laughter become cruel? How does style reflect moral perspective? Does shame lead to self-awareness? This book is of great interest to scholars and students of Shakespeare studies, Renaissance studies and the history of ethics.

Reading Class through Shakespeare, Donne, and Milton

Why study Renaissance literature? Reading Class through Shakespeare, Donne, and Milton examines six canonical Renaissance works to show that reading literature also means reading class. Warley demonstrates that careful reading offers the best way to understand social relations and in doing so he offers a detailed historical argument about what class means in the seventeenth century. Drawing on a wide range of critics, from Erich Auerbach to Jacques Ranciere, from Cleanth Brooks to Theodor Adorno, and from Raymond Williams to Jacques Derrida, the book implicitly defends literary criticism. It reaffirms six Renaissance poems and plays, including poems by Donne, Shakespeare's Hamlet, and Milton's Paradise Lost, as the sophisticated and moving works of art that generations of readers have loved. These accessible interpretations also offer exciting new directions for the roles of art and criticism in the contemporary, post-industrial world.

Earth Perfect?

"Earth Perfect? Nature, Utopia and the Garden" is an eclectic, yet rigorous reflection on the relationship – historical, present and future – between humanity and the garden. Through the lens of Utopian Studies – the interdisciplinary field that encompasses fictions all the way through to actual political projects, and urban ideals; in a nutshell, addressing the human natural drive towards the ideal – "Earth Perfect?" brings together a selection of inspiring essays, each contributed by foremost writers from the fields of architecture, history of art, classics, cultural studies, farming, geography, horticulture, landscape architecture, law, literature, philosophy, urban planning and the natural sciences. Through these joined voices, the garden emerges as a site of contestation and a repository for symbolic, spiritual, social, political and ecological meaning. Questions such as: what is the role of the garden in defining humanity's ideal relationship with nature? And how should we garden in the face of catastrophic ecological decline? Are addressed through wideranging case studies, including ancient Roman Gardens in Pompeii, Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights, the Gardens of Versailles, organic farming in New England and Bohemia's secret gardens, as well as landscape in contemporary architecture. Issues relating to the utopian garden are explored thematically rather than chronologically, and organised in six chapters: Being in nature, inscribing the garden, green/house, The garden politic, economies of the garden and how then shall we garden? Each essay is both individual in scope and part of the wider discourse of the book as a whole, and each is lusciously illustrated, bringing to life the subject with diverse visual material ranging from photography to historical documents, maps and artworks.

Verse Libel in Renaissance England and Scotland

In modern times, personal verbal attacks on others (libels) are nearly always in prose, but poets of the English Renaissance cultivated a robust tradition of verse libel. They composed insulting poems, sometimes to a length of several hundred lines, that could only circulate in manuscript--the punishments for libeling were severe. A number of these works circulated for decades, long after their victims were dead and forgotten, for insults (roasts, for example), can be entertaining and these poems are often lively, indecent examples of the kind. This book surveys the whole phenomenon of Renaissance verse libel and provides carefully edited texts of fifty-two of these poems, most of them made available here for the first time. Difficult and unusual words in these poems are glossed, while the commentary explains who is being attacked and why.

Preferred Iconography for development of new garden identity

The intention of this study is to highlight the importance of garden in creating national landscape identity. Malaysia with great interest and potential with three main ethnic groups was selected as a case study. It is presumed that people with divers cultural backgrounds would have difference opinions about gardens. With the attention to the visual and artistic quality of gardens, an iconographic method dealing with both art and history was selected in this study. It concluded that garden iconography should be understood as a collection of stimuli that is open to perception, interpretation, and judgment. Consequently, four gardens among well established gardens of the world were selected to be studied via an iconographic approach. Furthermore, garden iconographies were suggested and presented to the respondents through preference photo surveys. The result pinpointed the exact nature and total interest for Malaysian gardens. Moreover, it conceptualized an iconography that could be publicly accepted for Malaysian gardens. The suggested method could be employed by other communities who are interested to create their new garden identity.

From Language to Music

I consider this book a valuable contribution to the study of the lute repertory of the early sixteenth century and at the same time the first attempt at a repositioning of the lute repertory within the cultural milieu of Italian Renaissance. The lute repertoire played a major role in the Renaissance through mediating between the homegrown and the “imported” musical repertories, and in incorporating the most up-to-date artistic and linguistic trends. Lute intabulations, ricercars, and dances are the products of the mediation between language and music, and the development of the Italian language is very much reflected in the lute vocabulary.

Jyotsna Singh G. A Companion to the Global Renaissance. English Literature and Culture in the Era of Expansion

Featuring twenty one newly-commissioned essays, A Companion to the Global Renaissance: English Literature and Culture in the Era of Expansion demonstrates how today's globalization is the result of a complex and lengthy historical process that had its roots in England's mercantile and cross-cultural interactions of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. An innovative collection that interrogates the global paradigm of our period and offers a new history of globalization by exploring its influences on English culture and literature of the early modern period. Moves beyond traditional notions of Renaissance history mainly as a revival of antiquity and presents a new perspective on England's mercantile and cross-cultural interactions with the New and Old Worlds of the Americas, Africa, and the East, as well with Northern Europe. Illustrates how twentieth-century globalization was the result of a lengthy and complex historical process linked to the emergence of capitalism and colonialism Explores vital topics such as East-West relations and Islam; visual representations of cultural 'others'; gender and race struggles within the new economies and cultures; global drama on the cosmopolitan English stage, and many more

Memory and Intertextuality in Renaissance Literature

This book uses theories of memory derived from cognitive science to offer new ways of understanding how literary works remember other literary works. Using terms derived from psychology – implicit and explicit memory, interference and forgetting – Raphael Lyne shows how works by Renaissance writers such as Wyatt, Shakespeare, Jonson, and Milton interact with their sources. The poems and plays in question are themselves sources of insight into the workings of memory, sharing and anticipating some scientific categories in the process of their thinking. Lyne proposes a way forward for cognitive approaches to literature, in which both experiments and texts are valued as contributors to interdisciplinary questions. His book will interest researchers and upper-level students of renaissance literature and drama, Shakespeare studies, memory studies, and classical reception.

Raphael

Raphael, the Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance, was a genius in and ahead of his time. Together with Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, he formed the classical trinity of this era and elaborated a rich style of harmony and geometry. As one of the great masters of the Renaissance and artist to European royalty and the Papal court in Rome, his works comprise various themes of theology and philosophy, including but not limited to famous illustrations of the Madonna. His surroundings and experience gave rise to his propensity to combine the ideals of humanism with those of religion, and firmly established in him a conviction that art is a necessary medium to reveal the beauty of nature.

Instrumentalists and Renaissance Culture, 1420–1600

This innovative and multi-layered study of the music and culture of Renaissance instrumentalists spans the early institutionalization of instrumental music from c.1420 to the rise of the basso continuo and newer roles for instrumentalists around 1600. Employing a broad cultural narrative interwoven with detailed case studies, close readings of eighteen essential musical sources, and analysis of musical images, Victor Coelho and Keith Polk show that instrumental music formed a vital and dynamic element in the artistic landscape, from rote function to creative fantasy. Instrumentalists occupied a central role in courtly ceremonies and private social rituals during the Renaissance, and banquets, dances, processions, religious celebrations and weddings all required their participation, regardless of social class. Instrumental genres were highly diverse artistic creations, from polyphonic repertories revealing knowledge of notated styles, to improvisation and flexible practices. Understanding the contributions of instrumentalists is essential for any accurate assessment of Renaissance culture.

Gwendolyn Brooks's Poetry

Gwendolyn Brooks was born in 1917 and died in 2000, so she formed a bridge between contemporary arts and Harlem Renaissance. She got to know some of the founders of Negro Renaissance, like Langston Hughes and W.E.B. DuBois, and she also taught younger African-American poets, for instance, Sonia Sanchez and Rita Dove. In this respect, her poetry embraced and synthesized the literary tradition of the Plantation period, the Reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, and the Black Arts Movement; so the reader can find not only the traces of Negro spirituals and folktales but also the patterns of jazz and rap music in her poems. Gwendolyn Brooks was a ?Poet Laureate? and acquired high critical acclaim in the US among African-American poets, however, in this book, I do not just praise Brooks?s poetry as such, instead of this, I try to identify certain salient topics and characteristics of Brooks?s poems typical of African-American people and the black vernacular. In an attempt to accomplish this goal, I introduce four topics through which I believe the suggested distinctiveness grows to be presentable. The themes are the following: religiosity, musicality, sexuality and social entrapment.

Provides a detailed map of contemporary critical theory in Renaissance and Early Modern English literary studies beyond Shakespeare A Handbook of English Renaissance Literary Studies is a groundbreaking guide to the contemporary engagement with critical theory within the larger disciplinary area of Renaissance and Early Modern studies. Comprising commissioned contributions from leading international scholars, it provides an overview of literary theory, beyond Shakespeare, focusing on most major figures, as well as some lesser-known writers of the period. This book represents an important first step in bridging the divide between the abundance of titles which explore applications of theory in Shakespeare studies, and the relative lack of such texts concerning English Literary Renaissance studies as a whole, which includes major figures such as Marlowe, Jonson, Donne, and Milton. The tripartite structure offers a map of the critical landscape so that students can appreciate the breadth of the work being done, along with an exploration of the ways in which the treatments of or approaches to key issues have changed over time. Handbook of English Renaissance Literary Studies is must-reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of early modern and Renaissance English literature, as well as their instructors and advisors. Divided into three main sections, “Conditions of Subjectivity,” “Spaces, Places, and Forms,” and “Practices and Theories,” A Handbook of English Renaissance Literary Studies: Provides an overview of theoretical work and the theoretical-informed competencies which are central to the teaching of English Renaissance literary studies beyond Shakespeare Provides a map of the critical landscape of the field to provide students with an opportunity to appreciate the breadth of the work done Features newly-commissioned essays in representative subject areas to offer a clear picture of the contemporary theoretically-engaged work in the field Explores the ways in which the treatments of or approaches to key issues have changed over time Offers examples of the ways in which the practice of a theoretically-engaged criticism may enrich the personal and professional lives of critics, and the culture in which such critical practice takes place
