Cultural studies is arguably the most ample and rewarding interdisciplinary approach in contemporary theory. To illustrate the richness and variety of and to represent the most important trends in this discipline the writers of this introductory guide have focused on a number of the most influencial figures on/in it – Roland Barthes, Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu, Stuart Hall, Linda Hutcheon. To present the theoretical notions in practice the writers have chosen George Bernard Shaw’s popular play Pygmalion and its yet more popular film version My Fair Lady, which, they suggest, provide fascinating examples for in-depth analyses from a cultural studies perspective.

Developing Cultural Identity

In psychology, there is growing research interest in the issues of cultural identity, which has been recognized to be of much interest in shaping human''s behavior and experience. Cultural identity is a new concept in the field of Cultural Psychology. Consequently, studies that define and account for this topic are still scarce. The present qualitative study aims at giving a better understanding of the development of cultural identity and it examines how the experience of studying abroad influences the development of cultural identity of Albanian students in Italy and the United Kingdom. Because the two countries have different histories with immigration, it was hypothesized that the experience of studying abroad would influence their cultural identity differently. The interviews explored four components of cultural identity: self-identification, cultural involvement, sense of belonging, and evaluative attitudes (Phinney,1998).The analysis showed that, even though their experiences differed, Albanian students in both locations developed transcultural identities. This supports the increasing growth of transcultural identities suggested by Suarez-Orozco (2001).

It seems, an effective cultural policy is crucial to offer universal access to unique cultural practices, like classical music. The current debate does not take into account the importance of tradition and the critical role of multiculturalism. Pickren Wade A History of Modern Psychology in Context

A fresh look at the history of psychology placed in its social, political, and cultural contexts A History of Modern Psychology in Context presents the history of modern psychology in the richness of its many contexts. The authors resist the traditional storylines of great achievements by eminent people, or schools of thought that rise and fall in the wake of scientific progress. Instead, psychology is portrayed as a network of scientific and professional practices embedded in specific temporal, social, political, and cultural contexts. The narrative is informed by three key concepts—indigenization, reflexivity, and social constructionism—and by the fascinating interplay between disciplinary Psychology and everyday psychology. The authors complicate the notion of who is at the center and who is at the periphery of the history of psychology by bringing in actors and events that are often overlooked in traditional accounts. They also highlight how the reflexive nature of Psychology—a science produced both by and about humans—accords history a prominent place in understanding the discipline and the theories it generates. Throughout the text, the authors show how Psychology and psychologists are embedded in cultures that indelibly shape how the discipline is defined and practiced, the kind of knowledge it creates, and how this knowledge is received. The text also moves beyond an exclusive focus on the development of North American and European psychologies to explore the development of psychologies in other indigenous contexts, especially from the mid-20th-century onward.

Being Malaysian Does Not Mean Being Malaysian

This research revolves around the field of cross cultural study whereby the researcher focuses on discovering exactly by what means and way cultural stereotypes influences management effectiveness in the Malaysian hospitality workforce. It was observed from past studies that organizations are taking necessary measures in forming strategies to overcome challenges formed by cultural stereotypes. However, the issue still exists due to the challenges in terms of adaptation and understanding of cultural differences among people. This indicates that the growing phenomenon of globalization has not spared culture, as the integration of different cultures leads to the act of “cultural stereotyping”, one of the many facets in the context of culture. This study proved the existence of contradictory evidence as oppose to the extensive literature from previous studies with regard to this research area.

Child Maltreatment in Rural Communities

Issues concerning child maltreatment have received less attention in traditional or rural communities in the developing world. Rural communities in Ghana are no exception. The nature and extend of child abuse in rural Ghana, thus far, received little attention, and there is paucity of empirical data on its occurrence. This may be due to such cultural factors as the belief in the absolute authority of the elderly and the need to protect the privacy of families. As a result, such communities become the breeding ground for child maltreatment. The Author holds a BA (Hons) Psychology and Information Studies from the University of Ghana and a Master of Philosophy (Developmental Psychology) from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway as well as Master of Philosophy in Cognitive Neuropsychology from the University of Oslo.

Jeffrey C. Alexander Performance and Power

Performativity has emerged as a critical new idea across the humanities and social sciences, from literary and cultural studies to the study of gender and the philosophy of action. In this volume, Jeffrey Alexander demonstrates how performance can reorient our study of politics and society. Alexander develops a cultural pragmatics that shifts cultural sociology from texts to gestural meanings. Positioning social performance between ritual and strategy, he lays out the elements of social performance – from scripts to mise-en-scène, from critical mediation to audience reception – and systematically describes their tense interrelation. This is followed by a series of empirically oriented studies that demonstrate how cultural pragmatics transforms our approach to power. Alexander brings his new theory of social performance to bear on case studies that range from political to cultural power: Barack Obama's electoral campaign, American failure in the Iraqi war, the triumph of the Civil Rights Movement, terrorist violence on September 11th, public intellectuals, material icons, and social science itself. This path-breaking work by one of the world's leading social theorists will command a wide interdisciplinary readership.

Interpreting Scriptures in Judaism, Christianity and Islam

This comparative study traces Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scriptural interpretation from antiquity to modernity, with special emphasis on the pivotal medieval period. It focuses on three areas: responses in the different faith traditions to tensions created by the need to transplant scriptures into new cultural and linguistic contexts; changing conceptions of the literal sense and its importance vis-a-vis non-literal senses, such as the figurative, spiritual, and midrashic; and ways in which classical rhetoric and poetics informed - or were resisted in - interpretation. Concentrating on points of intersection, the authors bring to light previously hidden aspects of methods and approaches in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. This volume opens new avenues for interdisciplinary analysis and will benefit scholars and students of biblical studies, religious studies, medieval studies, Islamic studies, Jewish studies, comparative religions, and theory of interpretation.

The Function of Translation in Promotion of Cultural Modernity in Iran

The present book is a new attempt in function-oriented descriptive translation studies (DTS) which sets out to investigate the ways in which translation works in socio-cultural and political contexts. Its main focus is on the Iranian literary and cultural polysystem during and after the 1906-1911 Constitutional Revolution. Accordingly, how translation contributed to the promotion of cultural modernity in Iran is articulated as the central concern of the study. At macro level, the relation between culture and translation is discussed, arguing that translation is a matter of cultural transcoding rather than linguistic transfer; it is a cultural phenomenon which can contribute to social changes. Against this backdrop, it demonstrates the cultural bearings of translation on Iranian culture. In so doing, first the concept of cultural modernity and its characteristics is discussed and then Even-Zohar's polysystem theory and intersystemic interferences of literature and translation is explored. Meanwhile, the positions of Iranian scholars on cultural and literary modernity are introduced.

The Logical Founadation of Psychology

This books concerns with the relationship between Psychology as a cognitive discipline and the logical foundation on which psychological theories can be based. This book is dealing with Gestalt psychological theory from the point of philosophy of science where concern is given to the logical foundation on which all developments of Gestalt psychology can be reduced. The central base of Gestalt psychology based on what we call relational structuralism which concerns with the relationships between the elements of experience. This philosophical perspective is well developed through group theory. This book investigates the problem of perception, as discussed by the Gestaltists, from relational structuralism. According to that epistemological view, it appeals that perceptual knowledge can be detached from knowledge of the entities forming the form or the structure, so long as the knowledge is confined to assertion of forms, it is not tied down or referred to any particular realm of content. My main concern is to show that the major argument of the relational structuralism implied by group theory can account for organizational perceptual phenomena as emphasized by the Gestaltists.
