This book, Engineering and Sustainable Community Development, presents an overview of engineering as it relates to humanitarian engineering, service learning engineering, or engineering for community development, often called sustainable community development (SCD). The topics covered include a history of engineers and development, the problems of using industry-based practices when designing for communities, how engineers can prepare to work with communities, and listening in community development. It also includes two case studies -- one of engineers developing a windmill for a community in India, and a second of an engineer "mapping communities" in Honduras to empower people to use water effectively -- and student perspectives and experiences on one curricular model dealing with community development.Table of Contents: Introduction / Engineers and Development: From Empires to Sustainable Development / Why Design for Industry Will Not Work as Design for Community / Engineering with Community / Listening to Community / ESCD Case Study 1: Sika Dhari's Windmill / ESCD Case Study 2: Building Organizations and Mapping Communities in Honduras / Students' Perspectives on ESCD: A Course Model / Beyond Engineers and Community: A Path Forward

COMMUNITY LITERACY JOURNAL 12.1 (Autumn 2017) | The journal understands “community literacy” as the domain for literacy work that exists outside of mainstream educational and work institutions. It can be found in programs devoted to adult education, early childhood education, reading initiatives, lifelong learning, workplace literacy, or work with marginalized populations, but it can also be found in more informal, ad hoc projects. For COMMUNITY LITERACY JOURNAL, literacy is defined as the realm where attention is paid not just to content or to knowledge but to the symbolic means by which it is represented and used. Thus, literacy makes reference not just to letters and to text but to other multimodal and technological representations as well. Flip This Church is a book that I almost entitled The Things Seminary Never Taught Me, because it is all about the 'stuff' I learned the hard way from my first pastorate. This book is about leadership; not just ordinary leadership, but extra-ordinary leadership. Extraordinary leadership is more than just seeing a problem and addressing it over and over again. It is about providing specific solutions and then empowering others in the community to stand up and fight for these changes. Framed within the context of the faith-based community in the African-American Church, this book answers the question of how we, as a Black church, can better serve our community.

This (SECOND EDITION) book is about 'strengths-based practice' in social work. Strengths based practice refers to the identification of 'strengths' within an individual, family, or community, which are then employed to aid in promoting self-fulfilment and healing in a client. Strengths-based practice is a deliberate shift away from language and practices based on a client's deficits or pathology--- a widespread approach that has dominated many fields within social science for some time--- to one that focuses on the client's strengths. This premise is not a new idea as it has existed in the writings and practice of many of the great philosophical leaders and social work practitioners.

This thoroughly revised and updated second edition of Methods for Community-Based Participatory Research for Health provides a step-by-step approach to the application of participatory approaches to quantitative and qualitative data collection and data analysis. With contributions from a distinguished panel of experts, this important volume shows how researchers, practitioners, and community partners can work together to establish and maintain equitable partnerships using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) approach to increase knowledge and improve the health and well-being of the communities involved. Written for students, practitioners, researchers, and community members, the book provides a comprehensive presentation of innovative partnership structures and processes, and covers the broad spectrum of methods needed to conduct CBPR in the widest range of research areas—including social determinants of health, health inequities, health promotion, community interventions, disease management, health services, and environmental health. The contributors examine effective methods used within the context of a CBPR approach including survey questionnaire, in-depth interview, focus group interview, ethnography, exposure assessment, and geographic information system mapping. In addition, each chapter describes a case study of the application of the method using a CBPR approach. The book also contains examples of concrete tools and measurement instruments that may be adapted by others involved in CBPR efforts.

"Celebration Circles" is about sharing our stories, deepening relationships, and celebrating life. It is based on how some indigenous cultures gathered in a circle to share their stories and build community. Today we draw on the wisdom and familiarity of gathering in circle and adapt it to present day needs and settings. Collectively we recognize our need to deepen connections and create community in our lives. Nancy McCreight and Sherry Winter have taken this long-honored way of coming together and created a guide for creating circle gatherings to celebrate and affirm life. They developed 50 different circles, ranging from traditional celebrations such as birthdays and anniversaries to honoring a milestone in life and celebrating the solstices. Circle gatherings can be held in the home, community, retreat settings, schools, churches, and organizations.

Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Forestry / Forestry Economics, grade: D+, The Australian National University (Fenner School of Environment and Society), course: Independent Research Project, language: English, abstract: Forest plantations are important in Indonesia for both conservation and development aspects of forest management. They can provide a sustainable supply of wood resources to meet the increasing demands of wood processing industries, rather than escalating pressure on natural forests reserved for conservation. Income from plantation forests can address the economic marginalisation of forest dependent people. Over the last three decades, three strategies have been put into practice to stimulate the development of both large-scale and small-scale plantation forestry in Indonesia: farm forestry, community forestry and community-company partnership. The success, however, has been limited. This paper reviews experience of these strategies in Indonesia, and considers this in the context of criteria and indicators for sustainable plantation development suggested in the literature. It then develops an analytical framework to assess whether a new policy proposed in Indonesia, "the People Plantation Forest" (PPF) policy, is likely to stimulate community-based tree growing activities. Our analysis suggests that out of six elements identified in the framework, local institutional and capacity building, along with production technology and market acces...

Each of us, who wants to, can be part of the leadership process. We aim at contributing to a more fundamental approach to leadership that provides the reference for everyone who wants to participate in the leadership. It describes the leadership forces working in the organized community as they can help us to search for and strive "towards doing the good." It also can provide some guidance to all those students who not only want to master a profession but also want to show moral leadership in that profession.

Master's Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Environmental Sciences, Lund University (Lund University Centre for Sustainability Studies), course: Environmental Studies and Sustainability Science, language: English, abstract: The prevailing view on work excludes unpaid activities like care, individual or community work although they are crucial for economy and everyday life. Because the focus on paid work also leads to both social and environmental unsustainability, work has to be redefined. Cohousing evolved from the belief that through a collective organisation with a specific built and social environment, care work can become appreciated and facilitated. Hence, this thesis examines how cohousing today contributes to an extended view on work through a qualitative analysis of interviews with cohousing experts as well as participant observations of and focus group interviews with two cohouses in Austria and Sweden. The study shows that in cohousing the key to a redefinition of work is its community work, taking place at an intermediary level which is located between the private family and public spheres. Community work is more visible, pleasant and appreciated which is facilitated by a particular structure, physical space and a well-functioning community of a certain size. Furthermore, it allows a fairer distribution of work between women and men, facilitates family work, enables financial savings and strengthens the group. This study aims to reinforce the discussion ...

Larry Duggins Together

Together: Community as a Means of Grace addresses the concept of community as an avenue to a deeper relationship with God. Using an ecumenical Wesleyan approach, Duggins explores the concept of ""God as community"" to conclude that bringing people together in almost any setting allows them to grow in God's image. He frames this idea using the historical concept of the ""means of grace"": the ordinary ways in which people encounter God.Drawing heavily on the work of the Missional Wisdom Foundation, Duggins begins with a reflection on the community-building aspects of traditional church. He then uses storytelling to introduce four common forms of community: community through work, community through food, community through children's schools and activities, and community through shared recreational activities.Together is intended to help Christian people embrace the freedom to experiment with alternative forms of Christian community. Duggins nudges the missional imagination of people who long for spiritual connection and growth, but for whom traditional church is not the answer. Using a ""yes, and"" approach, he shows that traditional church can empower and stand alongside new forms of community, each of which can act as a means of grace.""We have a deep desire for community and a correspondingly deep thirst for grace. As Larry Duggins develops a practical theology grounded in scripture and Wesleyan tradition, he en...

This book seeks to better understand how museum practitioners visit museums, how these visits are impacted by their work and how their work is in turn impacted by their leisurely visits. The findings shared in this work are intended to start conversations about how professionals conceive the museum experience and the assumptions they bring to it based on their personal museum-going experiences.

The worked traced the origin of Labour Unions in Nigeria and established the reason for it coming to existence. It showed that the Labour union do not exist in a vacuum, it has its existence in the world and precisely in Nigeria where there are Christians. This implies that it exists in a Christian community. The methodology used in this work included a questionnaire, which was used to get responses from a Christian body which operates in a community where the labour unions also operate. The responses gotten from this Christian body were used to make the conclusions and recommendations, which this work has provided. In this work, it is evidenced that the labour union has impact on the Christian body, which was determined by the case study of this work. Such impact as seen in the work can be either positive or negative. One of such impact is a 2% monthly deduction, which is taken from every member's salary. On monthly basis, what a member is expecting from his salary is 98%. Another of such major impact is the benefits its members derive from them, which has already been made known in the chapter two of this work.

This volume builds understanding of practices in youth and community development that create or build social capital assets at the individual, group, and community levels. The authors explore whether programs contribute to the development of social capital at the individual and community scales, thereby fostering and enhancing positive youth development as well as community development. It includes articles on defining and measuring social capital through instruments designed to document impact and also to engage program participants. The authors then discuss program practices that build social capital in a wide range of youth development settings, from community-based service-learning to 4-H community clubs. Finally, they focus on building social capital in particular contexts, including work in rural communities with the most vulnerable youth. The volume is designed to help practitioners: Refine their dual focus on youth and community development Clarify constructs that help translate the public value of positive youth development to community stakeholders Provide examples of practices that link youth and youth programs more intentionally to the social relationships that knit communities together. This is the 138th volume of New Directions for Youth Development, the Jossey-Bass quarterly report series dedicated to bringing together everyone concerned with helping young people, including scholars, practitioners, and people from different disciplines and professions.

Frederik Dahlke Eliminating waste in software projects. Effective knowledge management by using web based collaboration technology

Knowledge management is controlling the transfer, distribution, and availability of knowledge. Traditionally, knowledge management processes are predefined; e.g. it is laid out in detail which document template, data structure, system, or work flow steps have to be used in order to manage knowledge. But knowledge management itself is complex. It is simply not possible to predefine the typical flow of work in knowledge intensive processes in advance. So rather than trying to determine the procedures it is more promising to analyze which factors can be used in order to control the outcome of the knowledge management process. By respecting the lean knowledge management principles, developed and first presented within this book, any manager can control the success of knowledge management in a lean software project any time.Enterprise 2.0 and Web 2.0 technologies perfectly support the lean knowledge management principles, and far better than any traditional approach, based on text processors, presentation software, spreadsheets, and E-Mail can do. Together, the lean knowledge management principles and Enterprise 2.0 form a new approach to knowledge management, which delivers value that can not be reached otherwise.

Sarkar Rajat Jyoti Public Distribution System in India - Some Emerging Issues

In India PDS is not the only answer for improving food security of the poor because it can help only those who have purchasing power. Other anti- poverty programs have to be strengthened as part of the economic reforms for creating income generation among the poor and vulnerable sections of the people. So Public Distribution System will become a fruitful food security program if it is merged with the employment generating programs and nutrition based programs. From the above study I see that National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (NREGS) has the great potential in enhancing food security and livelihood security of the rural poor. From this study I have seen that Public Distribution System is socially viable but it is not economically viable. Actual poor people will be the ultimate looser if this scheme is abolished completely. As it is a socially viable approach, we should not abolish it completely. Rather we have to remove the loopholes inherent in it. We can get better result if PDS is merged with employment schemes like NREGS. As NREGS is self targeting, the non poor people will be automatically opt out if it is merged with Public Distribution System.

This adult, non-fiction book is based on mental health and illness. It is well thought out, wonderfully presented, simple and yet informative, a reference for everyone, without the stuffy terminology, which the author has been able to 'define and describe', deceivingly effortlessly. It also includes real stories by real people, including one from the author, who on a daily basis are challenged by mental health issues, whether directly or indirectly, to seek an avenue that can lead to a happy and fulfilling life. Essentially there are two parts, the daily, real life struggle and the 'define and describe' reference. This little pocket sized book is designed to help the reader understand the basic differences between the more common mental health problems, which in turn should provide the much needed information to create accurate community awareness. The real stories will in turn, give a real insight into how life can be for so many people. The biggest challenge faced by people who survive or suffer from mental illness is the ignorance of the community and even those in their immediate environment, making his or her work life, social life, school life and/or home life quite unbearable and suffocating. The content will keep the reader thinking and reflecting for years, bringing about the motivation to share his or her thoughts with others.

Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is becoming widespread as a clean and gentle energy source for the earth. The main drawback of currently used photovoltaic cell is its low conversion efficiency and materials with the appropriate band gaps that can perfectly match the broad range of solar radiation. Recently it has been shown that the energy gap of InxGa1-xN alloys potentially can be continuously varied from 0.7 to 3.4 eV, providing a perfect matching to the full-solar-spectrum. Therefore, InxGa1-xN becomes a promising material for very high efficiency multijunction solar cell. Any desired value of bandgap can be obtained from this material choosing the appropriate composition. In this work, InxGa1-xN-based multijunction solar cells have been designed theoretically for high efficiency and the performance of the designed solar cells are evaluated with various parameters.

Li Shaomin Li Managing International Business in Relation-Based Versus Rule-Based Countries

Подробнее...

Most executives and business students are familiar with how the rule-based system functions; few understand how relation-based system works (which accounts for the majority of the countries in the world). Many dismiss it as backwards and attribute it to cultural traditions and norms (such as the Chinese guanxi tradition). This book dispels these myths and shows that people rely on the relation-based system not owing to specific cultural factors, but because of the stage of development in these countries. When the market is limited in scale and informal networks are thick, the relation-based system can be quite effective and efficient. The author applies this line of thinking to explain why business practices differ and how business people should interact across the two governance systems.

Praise for Becoming an Engaged Campus «This provocative yet exceedingly practical book looks at all of the angles and lays bare the opportunities and barriers for campus-community engagement while providing detailed pathways toward change. This comprehensive treatise marks a significant shift in the literature from the what and why of public engagement to the how. It is simply superb!»—Kevin Kecskes, associate vice provost for engagement, Portland State University «Becoming an Engaged Campus is an essential guidebook for university leaders. It details the specific ways that campuses must align all aspects of the institution if they are to be successful in the increasingly important work of community outreach and engagement.»—George L. Mehaffy, vice president for academic leadership and change, American Association of State Colleges and Universities «Most colleges and universities make the rhetorical claim of community engagement; this book is an excellent primer on how to transform the rhetoric into reality. The authors do not speak in abstract terms. They describe the specific structures, policies, and programs that have made Northern Kentucky University a national model of how a large urban university can transform its impact on the region it is supposed to serve.»—William E. Hyperspectral imaging is a powerful technique and has been used in a large number of applications. However, it generates massively large image data sets. Access and transport of these data sets will stress existing processing, storage and transmission capabilities. A new embedded, block-based, wavelet transform coding algorithm of low complexity is developed for hyperspectral image compression: Three-Dimensional Set Partitioned Embedded bloCK (3D-SPECK). 3D-SPECK efficiently encodes 3D volumetric hyperspectral image data by exploiting the dependencies in all dimensions. It can generate either SNR scalable or resolution scalable embedded bitstreams. It can also generate ROI retrievable bitstreams. This book introduces 3D-SPECK and describes its technical details. It is demonstrated that 3D-SPECK has excellent performance on hyperspectral image compression.

A multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving in community-based organizations using decision models and operations research applications A comprehensive treatment of public-sector operations research and management science, Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence-Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities addresses critical problems in urban housing and community development through a diverse set of decision models and applications. The book represents a bridge between theory and practice and is a source of collaboration between decision and data scientists and planners, advocates, and community practitioners. The book is motivated by the needs of community-based organizations to respond to neighborhood economic and social distress, represented by foreclosed, abandoned, and blighted housing, through community organizing, service provision, and local development. The book emphasizes analytic approaches that increase the ability of local practitioners to act quickly, thoughtfully, and effectively. By doing so, practitioners can design and implement responses that reflect stakeholder values associated with healthy and sustainable communities; that benefit from increased organizational capacity for evidence-based responses; and that result in solutions that represent improvements over the status quo according to multiple social outcome measures. Featuring quantitative and qualitative analytic methods as well as prescriptive and exploratory decision modeling, the book also includes: Discussions of the principles of decision theory and descriptive analysis to describe ways to identify and quantify values and objectives for community development Mathematical programming applications for real-world problem solving in foreclosed housing acquisition and redevelopment Applications of case studies and community-engaged research principles to analytics and decision modeling Decision Science for Housing and Community Development: Localized and Evidence-Based Responses to Distressed Housing and Blighted Communities is an ideal textbook for upper-undergraduate and graduate-level courses in decision models and applications; humanitarian logistics; nonprofit operations management; urban operations research; public economics; performance management; urban studies; public policy; urban and regional planning; and systems design and optimization. The book is also an excellent reference for academics, researchers, and practitioners in operations research, management science, operations management, systems engineering, policy analysis, city planning, and data analytics.
