The development of antibiotic resistance by bacteria is an evolutionary inevitability, a convincing demonstration of their ability to adapt to adverse environmental conditions. Some Gram-positive organisms are extremely adaptable and rapidly develop resistance, whereas others have not developed good strategies to overcome antibiotics. Staphylococci and enterococci, in particular are associated with clinically relevant resistance. The epithet of superbugs, if one can define these as bacterial pathogens resistant to almost all clinically available agents, can be truly applied to resistant strains of Gram-positive species, especially to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and to glycopeptide- or vancomycinresistant enterococci (GRE or VRE).

Antibiotic resistance patterns of bacterial microbiomes isolated from the New Calabar River were used to build up models on the possible effects of environmental pollutants on antibiotic resistance. The microbiomes were obtained from water and sediment samples collected at georeferenced sites on the river. This is the basis of the microbiome biogeochemico-graphic information system (MBCGIS). A combination of nutritional and physicochemical factors is presented as support for the existence of microbiome antibiograms in ecosystems challenged with environmental pollutants.High incidence of antibiotic resistance in environments with pronounced industrial and human activities, suggest possible effects of pollutants on the ecosystem. A weak correlation (r = 0.28) between incidence of antibiotic resistance and faecal coliforms implies that the antibiotic resistance patterns of microbiomes may be due to factors that are not linked to faecal pollution. The presence of chemical pollutants may contribute to the risk of increased antibiotic resistance in the environment. Sustainable development demands rigorous legislation for the protection of natural water resources.

We examined a sample of 90 individuals that had previously received a course of appropriate antibiotics for Lyme disease without experiencing full resolution of their symptoms and had evidence of persistent infection documented by PCR analysis. Mean duration of symptoms was 9.5 years (range 1 - 40 years). The treatment was adapted to the individual case according to clinical response. Long term antibiotic therapy was initiated and patients were treated continuously for at least 6 months, in some cases several years of intermittent therapy was administered. About 38.8% of the patients experienced full remission of symptoms while about 56.7% reported a significant improvement, 5.6% of patients were deemed refractory to therapy. Therapeutic modalities are discussed in detail.

In recent years environmental researchers have drawn attention to reports on measured contents of drugs in surface water, ground water and drinking water all over the world. Several antibiotics enter aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems through the discharge of effluents from farms. Hydroides elegans is a sedentary fouling tubiculous polychaete available in plenty on the hulls of the ships, fishing boats and floating material on the sea water. Its Fertilization triggers a complex sequence of structural and metabolic transformations in the eggs which results in the initiation of cell division and activation of embryogenesis. Antibiotic were used to assess the effects on various developmental stages of H. elegans in relation to concentration and exposure time. The result of the present study on the effect of flucloxacillin on fertilization and early embryonic stages of H. elegans are presented in four different parameters such as cumulative time, individual stage time, percentage of successful development and EC50 values. The present work confirms that the bioassay using the gametes and embryos of H. elegans can ideally be used to assess the relative toxicity of various drugs.

Mastitis, inflammation of mammary gland, is one of the most important diseases causing economic losses to dairy industry worldwide. Antibiotics are the only proven method of treatment against bovine mastitis. Presence of antibiotic residues in milk and food chain are the greatest disadvantage of use of antibiotics for the treatment of mastitis. In addition chemical teat dip residues pose another health hazards. Hence, it becomes necessary to develop new strategies for prophylaxis and treatment of mastitis. The study " Preventive and therapeutic modalities for control of bovine mastitis" was a step in this direction. The effect of 0.2% glutaraldehyde and Aloe vera teat dip on CMT point score and SCC was evaluated in 200 lactating cows for 90 days. Therapeutic efficacy of Amoxycillin, Sulbactam, vitamin E and selenium was judged on the basis of CMT point score and SCC. Antiinflammatory potential of vitamin E and selenium was adjudged by estimation of ceruloplasmin. Antioxidant potential was adjudged by estimation of catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity. Antibacterial potential of aqueous extract P. emblica was evaluated against S. aureus.

Bacterial Leaf Blight (BLB) of cotton is one of the most important diseases causing substantial losses to cotton crop in India. The disease is caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv malvacearum (Xam) which is a seed borne foliar pathogen of cotton. Several studies were conducted on the bacterial growth facilitators, varieties of cotton, efficacy of fungicides and antibiotics. Resistance for BLB was screened within 40 varieties, out of which 6 (Lohit, Shyamli, Acala 3080, LD 419, RG 8, CAD 4) were resistant and 10 were found to be moderately susceptible. Culture media studies were performed for the optimum growth of the pathogen, nutrient broth facilitated optimum growth of the bacterium followed by Muller Hinton agar. The efficacy of 12 fungicides was tested against the bacterium. Thiram, Mercuric chloride, Carbendazin with Mancozeb, Bavistin, Captan and Formaldehyde were found effective against Xam. Testing for efficacy of antibiotics implied that streptomycin and chloramphenicol gave optimum results.

Maize kernel infection by Aspergillus flavus and later aflatoxin contaminatuion are worldwide problems in production and storage. Genetic resistance to A. flavus is most cost-effective to minimize the loss to kernels. To study the inheritance of A. flavus resistance, maize diallel and half-sib family crosses were made and genetic effects analyzed for percent kernel infection (PKI) rates using MIKI. Highly significant GCA, SCA and reciprocal effects were found. Two parents had desirable GCA effects on enhancing the average resistance performance in hybrid progeny. Three crosses had consistently negative SCA effects over year. They revealed that genetic resistance to kernel infection by A. flavus existed in maize and was identifiable and exploitable. Both diallel and half-sib analyses agreed and confirmed genotypic, additive and dominance effects. Lab-based PKI compared with the field-based demonstrated that it was more effective in screening for resistant maize germplasm. This study is instructive to breeders, geneticists, and pathologists in that these methods can be realistic solutions to identifying desired genes and breeding for genetic resistance.

In this study we have collected 21 patient samples having pyogenic skin infection to assess their antibiotic susceptibility by disc diffusion method and to isolate quinolone-resistant strains.Among 21 patient samples only four samples were quinolone-susceptible. A few of the quinolone-resistant samples are also methicillin resistant. The majority of the clinical isolates were gram-positive.8 samples within the 17 clinical isolates gave positive result in plasmid isolation.1 quinolone-susceptible but methicillin resistant strain also yielded plasmids. These 9 samples also gave distinct band pattern when they were digested with restriction enzyme EcoRI, HindIII, HinfI. Those isolated plasmids were transformed to E. coli DH5α strain,among the 8 samples 6 samples transformed quinolone resistance to sensitive cells.

Metabolic resistance is of one of the common mechanisms among insects. This manuscript highlight the role of insecticide detoxifying enzymes (ie., Esterases, Glutathion S-transferases and Monooxygenases) in developing resistance in insects. Fruit fly, Bactocera dorsalis, was used a a model organism. It was concluded from the study that resistance development is a complex process, no single mechanism can explain this phenomenon alone. So there is need for further studies to take other mechanisms into account, in order to describe the mechanism of insecticide resistance in Bactrocera dorsalis, comprehensively.

Molecular Breeding approaches for Yellow Stem Borer resistance in Rice is difficult due to complex genetic of the character and inherent difficulties in screening. Mapping of QTL's linked to traits would improve the phenotypic evaluation for the trait and F8 population was developed using parents contrasting in the reaction to the yellow stem borer resistance. Simple Sequence Repeat Analysis enabled as to identify phenotypic specific SSR markers. The marker phenotype association analysis involving single marker analysis (SMA) resulted in the detection of two markers viz., RM104 and RM314 associated with Dead Heart symptoms. The SMA carried out in the present study both by ANOVA and linear regression involving the SSR marker data and the phenotypic data associated with YSB resistance resulted in the association of RM104 on chromosome 1 with deadheart incidence under both glass house and field conditions. Scoring the linker markers in the set of germplasm confirmed that reproducibility and their association to resistance.

Green turns to twentieth- and recent twenty-first-century representations of the Middle Passage created by African-descended artists and writers. Examining how these writers and performers revised and reimagined the Middle Passage in their work, Green argues that they recognized it as a historical and geographical site of trauma as well as a symbol for a place of understanding and change. Their work represents the legacy African captives left for resisting "social death" (the idea that Black life does not matter), but it also highlights strong resistance to that social death (the idea that it does matter).
